In Amsterdam Zuidoost (the Southeast district) you don’t need to buy anything new to enjoy a fun, more sustainable day. It’s all about doing things together here: from swapping clothes with your neighbours to learning new things, repairing clothes and enjoying good food.
We’ll show you five places where reuse, craftsmanship and community take centre stage. From clothing swap bags that travel through the neighbourhood to a community hub where vegan Surinamese flavours and local energy come together. Put on your favourite shoes and head out into Zuidoost.
Share your wardrobe with The Clothing Loop
Your wardrobe is overflowing, but you’ve got nothing to wear? Sound familiar? The Clothing Loop offers a convenient, more sustainable, and free way to swap clothes with people in your own neighbourhood. And it’s surprisingly easy to join one!
The idea is simple: a big bag full of clothes travels along the participants in a neighbourhood. Do you receive the bag from the previous participant? Then you take out what you like and add your own items that are still in good condition. After that, you pass the bag on to the next person on the list. This way clothes get a second life, and you get to know your neighbours straight away.
In Zuidoost there are several active Clothing Loops. You can join, among others:

Choose a Clothing Loop that suits you and sign up. You can swap along for free and keep clothes and toys in use for longer all at once.
Breathe new life into your clothes at A. Azaad Kleermakerij
A loose hem, a broken zip or trousers that are just a bit too long? That’s no reason to say goodbye to your favourite garment. At A. Azaad Kleermakerij on Bijlmerdreef 366b, in Bijlmer-Centrum, you can have your clothes altered or repaired for a fair price.
Why repair? According to research by WRAP, wearing a garment for nine months longer can reduce its carbon, water and waste footprint by 20 to 30%. On top of that, repairing clothes instead of buying something new is cheaper and lets you enjoy your clothes for longer.

Learn new skills at OBA Next Lab Kraaiennest
Curious what the library of the future looks like? It’s being built in Zuidoost! Since September 2025, OBA Next Lab has been located in a temporary building at Kraaiennest, right next to the metro station. Here, young people have the opportunity to experiment, make and learn. In 2030, the permanent OBA Next building of around 7,500 m² will open on the same square.
Fun fact: the temporary Lab is a modular, fully demountable wooden building, so the materials can be reused later.
Thanks to the acclaimed TUMO programme, there’s always something to do and learn in the Lab. At TUMO, a free after-school programme for young people between 12 and 18, you learn the skills of the future: from music production, filmmaking, animation and digital illustration to programming, robotics, 3D modelling and game design. Activities around entrepreneurship, AI and other skills that matter for the world of tomorrow are organised here as well. And if you fancy a break, you can head to café The Cornerstone in the same building.
Donate your textiles here
Do you have clothes that really can’t be repaired or swapped any more? Please don’t throw them in with the general waste. Across Zuidoost you’ll find textile donation points and containers where you can hand in clothing and textiles so they can be reused or recycled. Read more about textile collection in Amsterdam.
Find all textile containers and drop-off points on this map from the City of Amsterdam. You can also find donation points via the COSH! map by ticking the “show textile donation points” box. The map then shows the nearest collection points near you. Good to know: only hand in clean, dry clothing and keep torn or dirty textiles separate, following the instructions of the collection point. This maintains the quality of the collected clothing.

Enjoy a delicious meal at Yemayá’s
After a day of swapping, learning new things and repairing, it’s time for a break. Make a stop at Yemayá’s, also known as Yemayá’s Vegan Corner, in Reigersbos shopping centre. Since 2020, this spot has combined plant-based Surinamese soul food with social engagement and community building.
The menu features a varied selection of vegan dishes: from saoto and lentil soup to pitas with sweet-and-sour tofu or spicy tempeh, vegan burgers and traditional Surinamese pom, gruntu and moksi alesi. Freshly prepared, full of flavour. The name refers to Yemayá, the Yoruba goddess of the sea, and stands for empowerment, collaboration and eating together. Yemayá’s also works with local urban gardens, schools and food entrepreneurs in Zuidoost, and is welcoming people of all ages.
