More sustainable, more conscious and more budget-friendly shopping. It’s possible at these second-hand hotspots in Antwerp.
Looking for quality clothing that’s truly unique? Why not opt for second-hand? This is a more environmentally friendly choice, as clothes that are no longer worn are given a new lease of life. Did you know that only 21 per cent of the clothes in a wardrobe are actually worn? That’s such a waste! By shopping second-hand, unworn clothes and accessories are given a new purpose. Another advantage is that you can find some real gems second-hand, offering great value for money.
In Antwerp, you’ll find various second-hand shops where you can shop according to any budget and taste. Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly store selling both clothes, homewares and books or a boutique with a curated collection of sophisticated brands, these are the shops worth visiting when you’re in Antwerp!
Second-hand shopping for a good cause
Affordable second-hand shopping and supporting a good cause at the same time? It’s possible in the three locations of Oxfam in Antwerp! You can find the stores on the Lange Koepoortstraat, on the Brederodestraat and in Wilrijk. Oxfam is a movement that fights against inequality and for a fairer economy. With your purchase you not only make your wardrobe a bit more stylish and sustainable, but you also help many others who really need it. Here you’ll not only find second-hand clothing, accessories and shoes, but also second-hand kitchen utensils, books and interior items in good condition.
Colourful vintage and upcycled clothing for children and adults
Lapsi is the atelier-boutique of Hanne Nieberding around the corner of Antwerp Central Station. Hanne curates colourful vintage and secondhand clothing for children and adults with a strong eye for natural fabrics: cotton, linen, wool, and occasionally viscose. Around 10% of the items have been upcycled, reworked, re-dyed or altered by Hanne herself in collaboration with other makers. You can also bring in your own quality clothing in exchange for gift vouchers. Fun to know: at Lapsi you can regularly attend fun events like swap evenings, public repair sessions and more.
Pre-loved fashion from contemporary, high-quality brands
At concept store HOST in Berchem, you’ll not only find new, more conscious and sustainable fashion brands, but also a re-HOST-ed collection (a few houses further down the street, at Tangerine Sunshine) with pre-loved clothing in good condition. All second-hand garments that you find in the store have gone through a strict inspection, paying attention to quality, wear and tear, wearability and whether the garment is timeless. In addition, they also select clothing based on material, colour, design and they have a clear preference for more sustainable (Belgian) labels. Here you’ll find a mix of luxury fashion brands and clothing from quality mid-range stores, so there is a gem to find within every budget and style. Come in regularly, because the collection changes often!
