Stylish raincoats with a vision
Looking for a raincoat that’s not only functional, but also stylish and more sustainable? Then the Amsterdam brand BYBROWN is an absolute must-have. This innovative fashion brand designs elegant, feminine rainwear that’s produced in a more responsible way. The coats are made from certified recycled polyester and… coffee grounds! Thanks to this unique combination, they’re breathable, water-repellent and surprisingly comfortable.
Although BYBROWN doesn’t have a physical store, you’re welcome to visit the studio on Ferdinand Huyckstraat in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Simply schedule an appointment and visit them from Monday to Thursday between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM to try on and experience the full collection.
Batik with a contemporary twist
Do you love colourful prints with a story? Then Guave is the brand for you. This Amsterdam-based brand, founded by Romée and Myrthe, combines their love of traditional Javanese batik with a modern look. The unique fabrics are produced more ethically by small, independent ateliers in Indonesia – a conscious choice to support and keep the batik craft alive.
The clothing is then locally produced in the Netherlands, in collaboration with organisations like Enschede Textielstad and Het Gildelab. The result: distinctive, more sustainable fashion with a heart for culture and quality.
Guave doesn’t have a physical store, but you are very welcome to visit the studio in Amsterdam. Simply plan a visit on Wednesdays or Fridays via their website – and discover the collection up close.
Streetwear with a mission
Cool, conscious and connecting – that’s Lovetrigger. This Amsterdam urban streetwear brand shows that fashion can be more than just clothing. With four core values– diversity, sustainability, positivity and social impact – Lovetrigger creates streetwear that matters. The collection includes sweaters, hoodies, T‑shirts, jackets and accessories made from organic cotton. Everything is locally and socially produced by talented young people from vulnerable backgrounds and older people with a background in textiles.
Getting curious? Visit their store and showroom on Bos & Lommerweg in Amsterdam Nieuw-West and discover the collection up close.
Dive into the world of natural dyeing
Have you always wanted to learn how to dye textiles with plant-based and eco-friendlier dyes? At Roua Atelier, you’ll discover the magic of natural dyeing. During a fun, interactive workshop, Roua — an expert in eco-friendlier dyeing — will guide you through the entire process.
You’ll work with dye baths made from indigo, madder, herbal tea, avocado seeds and onion skins. This is not only more sustainable, but also surprisingly colourful! The workshops are open to both adults and children, and perfect for anyone who wants to be creative and more mindful with textiles. A unique experience that combines craftsmanship, sustainability and fun.
Besides giving workshops, Roua also collaborates with (established) fashion brands to dye their collections in an environmentally friendlier way. And all of this in her own atelier in Amsterdam Nieuw-West!
Gives colour to textiles with food waste
Another inspiring company in Amsterdam Nieuw-West that works with natural dyes: ILANGA. Instead of synthetic dyes, this Amsterdam-based company opts for a radically different approach: creating colour from food waste. Think onion skins, avocado peels and coffee grounds – transformed into plant-based pigments that are non-toxic, more sustainable and professionally applicable.
ILANGA offers natural dye solutions for textiles, garments and unsold inventory, and collaborates with scientists and brands to create a cleaner fashion industry.
Instead of immediately throwing away worn or damaged clothing, more and more people are choosing to repair it – and this is such a good thing! Because a loose hem, broken zipper or small hole is no reason to throw your favourite garment away. With a (simple) repair, you can significantly extend the life of your clothing and save resources, energy and waste. In Amsterdam Nieuw-West, you’ll find several professional tailors ready to breathe new life into your clothes. Repairing is not only more sustainable but often surprisingly affordable as well.
In Amsterdam Nieuw-West, you’ll find not only inspiring, creative fashion brands and professional tailors, but also more sustainable hotspots where you can enjoy delicious and more mindful meals. Stop by the Fruittuin van West, a green oasis on the edge of the city where you can stroll among the fruit trees, buy locally grown fruits and vegetables and enjoy organic dishes in the garden café. Everything comes straight from the land and you can taste the difference. It’s also a place where inspiring events are regularly organised, so keep an eye on their calendar! Or stop on the Zwarte Pad at Theehuis de Akermolen. This historic mill houses a charming teahouse with local, more sustainable products on the menu. Perfect for a more mindful break with a view of the water and meadows.
