Theehuis De Akermolen is a distinctive tea house located at Zwarte Pad 30 in De Aker, Amsterdam West. Situated within the restored stump of a former mill — once part of the Line and Defence Line of Amsterdam — it serves as both a café and local meeting spot.
Operated by Stichting De Vrije Geer, the tea house engages people with intellectual disabilities in kitchen and service roles, guided by experienced hospitality professionals. Together, they create a welcoming, accessible environment where guests can enjoy coffee, tea, homemade sandwiches, high teas, and light lunches either indoors or on the sunny terrace by the water.
Beneath the café, the original polder drainage mechanisms — such as the old scoop wheel and Archimedes screw — remain visible under a glass floor, offering a fascinating glimpse into the site’s engineering history. Upstairs, a multifunctional event space hosts cultural and social activities for local residents and can be rented for meetings or workshops, with scenic views across the polder.
Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00, Theehuis De Akermolen offers a tranquil stop for cyclists, walkers, and locals alike — whether for a relaxing break, community gathering, or thoughtful conversation over a toastie or slice of cake.
