Until the collapse of the wool industry in the 1960s, Tilburg was the Netherlands’ wool capital, with more than 300 households independently weaving on their looms and up to 145 operating mills. Although this chapter has closed, Tilburg’s renowned textile museum continues to pass local knowledge and expertise to its annual visitors. This dynamic and creative working museum in a former textile factory is the only place where textile design, art, fashion, industrial heritage and innovation come together. The city’s textile tradition and integration of sustainability are reflected in its diverse range of stores, clothing swaps and excellent tailors.
