Slow fashion, craftsmanship and design in Hamburg’s most charming corners.
Hamburg is much more than just Mönckebergstraße, Jungfernstieg and big department stores. If you take a closer look, you will find a city full of creativity, craftsmanship and character. The side streets, courtyards and charming neighbourhoods of this northern German metropolis are home to studios, boutiques and workshops run by designers who put their heart and soul into creating fairer, handmade or locally produced products.
This guide takes you to hidden shops, small businesses with an eye for detail and people who offer more sustainable alternatives to conventional fashion. Have fun browsing!
Timeless clothing with a Nordic feel
What once started as a small label for bags made from natural textiles is now a fixture for stylish slow fashion in Hamburg. At the Nordlicht flagship store, you will find clothing and accessories with a minimalist, Nordic aesthetic – completely plastic-free, made with a careful eye for materials and design. Discover Nordlicht’s fairer production and social commitment in Hamburg’s Sternschanze neighbourhood.
Instead of buying, borrow fashion
In Eimsbüttel, Kleiderei Hamburg offers a real alternative to the classic boutique: a fashion library for renting. From fairer produced labels such as Lanius or DariaDéh to special vintage pieces – you can rent clothes here, try them out and bring them back as soon as you feel like something new.
Whether for special occasions, creative everyday looks or simply for browsing: Kleiderei extends the life cycle of countless pieces and is a place for anyone who likes to experiment with fashion – without buying. By the way: If you are not yet a member, you are still welcome to buy some items regularly.
Maritime minimalism meets upcycled design
At 8beaufort.hamburg, the history of old ships’ sails continues to be written. Sneakers, bags and accessories are made from used canvas from the North Sea and English Channel. Each piece bears traces of past voyages and is produced in Portugal under fairer conditions in family-run businesses.
In Ottensen, founder Sabine Moormann shows how style, craftsmanship and environmental awareness can come together. With a clear design approach, plant-based leather and a colour palette inspired by the sea, 8beaufort.hamburg brings a breath of fresh air to the fashion world and turns upcycling into a real statement.
Tailor-made fashion for all sizes
In the heart of the Karoviertel, Jede Studio sets a clear example for diversity, quality and responsibility. Bettina Schmutz’s label produces timeless clothing from certified materials such as GOTS cotton and Lenzing Tencel – in a wide range of sizes which can be customised on request.
Whether it’s a breezy summer dress, a tailored top or accessories made from fabric offcuts: In the studio in Marktstrasse, fashion is not only designed, but also repaired and reimagined. Unique, conscious, versatile: discover the Jede Studios collection that celebrates diversity!
Fashion that celebrates diversity
Welcome to St. Pauli: Rosenblatt & Fabeltiere brings fairer produced clothing, lovingly curated labels and active inclusion all under one roof. Together with the team, people with psychological handicaps design and sell collections that combine style with responsibility.
In addition to their own designs, you will find a diverse selection of fairer fashion brands – from basics to unusual one-off pieces. Everything is carefully selected with a focus on quality, social responsibility and environmental sustainability. An inclusive and socially aware multi-brand store that makes diversity visible.
Unique items made from canvas – straight from the old train station
The fyksin studio in Volksdorf creates colourful bags, purses and accessories – made from reclaimed advertising banners. Sinah and Sabrina transform what would otherwise end up in the waste bin into functional everyday pieces with flair. Each piece is unique, robust, durable and designed with a touch of whimsy. Production takes place onsite, in a former railway station that now serves as a workshop, creativity hub and showroom.
Fair Fashion with a history
Located in the heart of St. Georg, Him & Laya blends Indian roots with contemporary conscious design. The store offers a carefully curated selection of more sustainable fashion for women and men – from casual basics to bold statement pieces. In addition to the in-house Himalaya line, you will find stylish accessories, homeware, natural cosmetics and gift ideas that all have one thing in common: quality and charisma.
What began as a flea market stall selling Indian fabrics is now a multi-generational family business with a conscientious attitude. In the basement outlet, favourites from past collections await you – it’s definitely worth exploring.
Workshops, fabric life cycle and collaborative design
In Colonnaden, right in the centre of Hamburg, House of All creates an accessible space for anyone who wants to rethink fashion. Instead of selling, the focus here is on designing: in workshops, participants learn how textiles can be recycled, repaired or repurposed – in a practical, creative and collaborative way.
Whether you want to bring your own ideas to life or take your first steps in sustainable fashion design: HALL4CRCLRTY is a place for tinkering, experimenting and sharing knowledge. A place where new ideas are created from old fabrics and fashion is turned into a movement.
Authentic style with appreciation for craftsmanship
In a bright studio in Hamburg’s Colonnaden, fashion with a personality is created. Founded by designer and sculptor Hanne Ludwig-van Tricht, the label combines elegant looks with honest craftsmanship. The collections are created in close co-operation with European manufacturers and focus on naturally dyed fabrics, mother-of-pearl buttons and high-quality details.
VAN TRICHT embodies quiet confidence, inspired by workwear, sportswear and vintage silhouettes. This is a label for everyone who appreciates sleek shapes, authentic materials and the beauty of simplicity – a place where fashion and artisanal workmanship meet at eye level.
Timeless looks with cleaner lines and responsibility
In the centre of the Karo district, the Clara Himmel Boutique offers stylish clothing and accessories that focus on quality and longevity. The selected pieces are manufactured under fairer conditions – some are even made in the boutique’s own workshop in Dortmund.
Between clean cuts, light materials and personalised consultations, you will find basics with a special twist that can be effortlessly combined. A store that delivers a cosy aesthetic and thoughtful details.
North German based wool knitwear
Authentic artisanship meets local stewardship at the Wendland-based boutique in Lüchow. vauno processes North German wool into long-lasting basics – from hats and blankets to jumpers. The wool comes from sheep farms in the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve and is processed in German mills before being woven in the company’s own workshop.
Founder Ute Luft has been turning these underrated threads into wearable favourites for over 15 years. Anyone looking for clothing with heritage that keeps them warm and shows some character will find it at vauno – a place where local touches take centre stage.
From handmade fashion, creative workshops and unique upcycled items to a fashion library: this COSH! City Guide shows that Hamburg’s local fashion world is full of surprises beyond the high street. You can find more inspiring addresses in our other COSH! City Guides.
