In the heart of northern Germany, a brand is redefining fashion with a touch of nature’s simplicity and sustainability. vauno, a name derived from the Wends for “wool,” is more than just a brand; it’s an emblem of authenticity and sustainability. At its core, vauno stands for exquisite clothing crafted from North German wool, embodying the spirit of regional pride and environmental responsibility.
Ute Luft, the visionary behind vauno and elbwolle, transformed her passion into a purpose. Sixteen years ago, Ute’s journey began in Wendland, where a quaint farmhouse and a flock of Gotland fur sheep laid the foundation for a revolution in woollen clothing. Her mission was clear – to showcase the untapped potential of North German wool, which, despite its lack of softness compared to Australian Merino wool, harbours a charm uniquely its own.
Today, Ute’s commitment shines through every strand of wool she sources from local shepherds, turning about 10 – 12 tons annually into yarns and fabrics. This wool, often overlooked, undervalued, and even disposed of, is now the cornerstone of vauno’s clothing line, a testament to the brand’s innovative spirit.
vauno’s ethos is deeply rooted in regional production. Though not as soft as cashmere, their wool carries a story of locality and minimal carbon footprint. The wool journeys from the Biosphere Reserve of the Elbe River Landscape to German spinners and weavers, culminating in hand-knitted beanies, blankets, scarves, and jumpers. These are crafted in vauno’s own workshop in Lüchow, Wendland. The result? Garments with a mere 950 kilometres of travel: a remarkable feat in today’s globalised world.
