It all began in 2011 with a tiny front room and a shop window onto Neukölln’s Weserstraße, right in front of the format workshop. Mareike wanted to know exactly how her clothes were made, so she made them herself. Bit by bit, labels with similar principles joined format on the rails. A move to Tellstraße followed in 2017, a bigger second shop opened on Karl-Kunger-Straße in November 2023, and since mid-2026 it’s one shop again.
Looking for clothes made in Berlin? The format pieces are cut from cotton, linen, hemp, silk and wool grown to organic farming standards. The team is refreshingly upfront about the catch: the small workshop behind the shop isn’t certified (yet), so the finished garments can’t carry an organic label. Full supply-chain certification is the goal, and they plan to publish the certificate number as soon as it’s in (see their explanation at https://format-favourites.de/pages/shops-in-berlin). Next to format, you’ll find knitwear from Alma & Lovis and thinking MU, backpacks by pinqponq, boots from Grand Step Shoes, wool scarves made in Belgium by Wolvis, and a whole drawer of sock labels. 28 of the brands carried here are screened in the COSH! Brand Index, so you can check each score before you drop by.
Good clothes come in the right format. Pop in Monday to Saturday, 11:00 to 19:00, on the corner of Karl-Kunger-Straße and Bouchéstraße, in the Kiez where Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Treptow meet. Try things on, feel the fabrics and ask about any format piece: the team happily works extra wishes into the in-house designs.
