In the ateliers of Arnhem, local designers combine creativity with a sustainable vision.
Arnhem is buzzing with creativity and this is reflected in the many artistic ateliers in the city. From local jewellery makers who work with recycled ceramics to fashion labels from Arnhem that create unique gems from leftover materials. Many designers combine their creativity with a sustainable vision by using recycled materials. Stroll through the Modekwartier and be amazed by the creative vibe here. In many ateliers you can even just walk in to see the makers at work! To make it easier for you, we’ve already listed the best upcycling designers in Arnhem down here.
Handmade, upcycled jewellery
Discover the handmade jewellery of local designer Marlies Dinnissen in her shop and atelier on the Klarendalseweg in Arnhem. Marlies makes all the jewellery here by hand. In her designs she combines silver with recycled ceramics. This way, shards of ceramic get a new life which creates a beautiful story for your unique ring or necklace. Do you have a ceramic heirloom yourself that’s broken or just a creative idea? Marlies Dinnissen is happy to get in touch with you and she’ll make the right piece of jewellery that suits your wishes.
Bags and accessories made from sustainable materials
For circular, high-quality and fairly made bags and accessories, go to the store of Arnhem fashion label Fraenck. The designs are timeless, unisex and will last for years. In the heart of Arnhem you’ll find the beautiful store with their production atelier in the back. In this atelier the entire collection is produced locally and in a social manner. For the collections they work for example with remnants from sail makers and leftovers of artificial leather, or they give other fabrics a second life. They already had collaborations with the NS, Bever and Berg, to transform ‘old’ materials into new, contemporary products.
Colourful and inclusive clothing from upcycled materials
Glitter, bright colours, bows, gemstones and a unique combination of these. Welcome to the colourful atelier of designer Hans Hutting. With his fashion label FUN Studio he makes inclusive underwear and other clothing items such as sweaters, pants and accessories that everyone can feel like themselves in. His target group is the queer community, but basically everyone is welcome to shop here. He often uses upcycled and leftover materials for his designs, making each design unique. Curious? Come visit the FUN Studio store/atelier in the Modekwartier in Arnhem.
Atelier with handmade jewellery and an alteration and repair service
Welcome to the store and atelier of jewellery designer Stefan Tijssen. Under the name Atelier Victor Tijssen he designs and makes unique, high-quality jewellery that is characterised by an organic, tough and innovative style. The atelier is known for its custom work, own collection and the professional alteration and repair services for existing jewellery. In addition to a handmade collection, you can also come here with existing jewellery, where gold from precious jewellery can be remade into new, unique and upcycled jewellery.
Handmade, minimalist leather bags made from leftover materials
Get to know Atelier Judith van den Berg, a place where high-quality leathers and leftover materials are transformed into handmade, minimalist leather bags and accessories. These high-quality leathers are leftovers, or slightly damaged materials that would otherwise be thrown away. Because Judith makes all the bags and accessories herself, she can look at all the materials individually and cut around any damaged parts. The result is a collection of timeless, minimalist, stylish and practical bags. A more conscious and sustainable way of designing! The studio is open three days a week, from Thursday to Saturday.

Upcycling label at Begane Grond
Looking for a unique item? At the creative department store Begane Grond in the Modekwartier Arnhem you’ll find the local, upcycling brand ChaPauw. This Arnhem designer makes unique garments from leftover materials and second-hand clothing. In this way, ‘old’ clothing that would otherwise end up in the landfill gets a second life! The result is cool and unique fashion items, such as upcycled jeans, reworked blazers and one-of-a-kind bags.
