Behind the walls of a former convent in Düsseldorf-Flingern, jewellery is made to be worn. Moritz Wenz Studio is located in Kloster Flingern at Flurstraße 57, a listed late-19th-century building that once housed a community of nuns. Here, trained goldsmith Moritz Wenz works on robust unisex jewellery and leather goods that appeal to men and women alike. He has been working with precious metals and leather for more than 25 years. His motto sums up his approach: “I don’t want to be a trend.”
Wenz trained in Pforzheim and Wuppertal, and for many years he also designed and produced for other brands. Today he has returned to focusing entirely on his own designs. His studio used to be on Ackerstraße; now he welcomes customers in the convent. His leather collection Flöz is inspired by miners’ equipment in the Ruhr region: sturdy leather bags and accessories with clean lines, made for everyday use. The leather is vegetable-tanned and comes from Germany and Belgium, and partner workshops in Germany produce it. This link between craft and origin runs through everything the studio makes.
For his jewellery, Wenz works with gold, silver, diamonds, gemstones and pearls, in a deliberately rough, bold design language. He makes larger rings, especially popular with men, as well as his own signet rings and personal wedding and engagement rings. Bespoke pieces are also possible, for example, if you come with an idea of your own. He doesn’t use newly mined gold: he works with recycled gold, such as old gold and dental gold. Together with a workshop in Pforzheim, he reprocesses heirlooms and precious metal offcuts, and he also sources diamonds and pearls from partners in Pforzheim. The range is rounded off with high-quality vintner’s knives and pocket knives.
