Small Wearable Coastlines in Düsseldorf’s Old Town
This October, Galerie Cebra in Düsseldorf’s old town presents Jewellery Made of Sand, an exhibition by Maria Eugenia Ramos from Buenos Aires. Gallerist Anemone Tontsch welcomes the artist’s work to her space opposite St. Andreas church.
Ramos’s project “Impermanence” is about transience, time and the constant movement of life. She works with sand she has collected from different regions of the world, and the sand becomes a symbol for fleeting moments and memories. In newer work such as the “Fragility” series, she explores human fragility. The seemingly unstable material contrasts with the lasting form of the jewellery.
From the collected sand, Ramos makes rings, brooches and earrings that are often described as small, wearable coastlines. Because each sand has its own colour and grain, every piece is unique. Ramos was a finalist at SCHMUCK, the fair for international jewellery art.
On 75 m², Galerie Cebra shows work by more than 200 jewellery designers and artists from Germany and abroad, alongside its own workshop. Visitors can see the exhibition during the gallery’s regular opening hours.
