Jeans are at the heart of it: at the wunderwerk flagship store at Lorettostraße 10 in Düsseldorf-Unterbilk, the Düsseldorf fashion label presents its women’s and men’s collection. Denim hangs alongside shirts, knitwear and jackets, all in a clean, urban style without conspicuous logos. The designs are meant to be timeless, not chasing every short-lived trend. If you know wunderwerk only from other retailers or the online shop, the brand’s own store gives the best overview of what it stands for, and you can try the cuts on the spot.
The label was founded in 2012 by Heiko Wunder, who was born in Düsseldorf. After years in the textile industry and in various roles, he wanted to show that fashion made from organic materials doesn’t have to look “eco”. That led to the motto “Don’t panic, it’s organic”, which has accompanied the brand since its first collection. A second line followed later: “More than organic”. The idea is that organic cotton alone isn’t enough, and that dyeing, washing, trims and production count too. The first own store opened in Düsseldorf in 2014. Today, wunderwerk has two stores: one in Düsseldorf and one in Nettetal on the Dutch border.
Denim takes centre stage. For many of its jeans, wunderwerk uses fabrics from an Italian denim mill. According to the brand, they are washed without chlorine compounds or potassium permanganate. Whenever cotton is used, it comes from controlled organic farming (kbA), and part of the collection is made from GOTS-certified materials. The label also works with Tencel and modal. For knitwear, wunderwerk uses organic virgin wool spun in Germany. When it comes to synthetic fibres, the brand weighs things up carefully: where they can be avoided, it does without them. They use them only when a small share clearly improves fit, freedom of movement, or durability. Polyacrylic and polyamide are ruled out entirely. The principle: as little synthetic fibre as possible, as much as makes sense for the function. Most products are made in the EU. Alongside clothing, the store carries a small selection of lifestyle products, such as Greek olive oil and sunscreen. Prices range from 25 to 600 euros depending on the piece.
Looking for organic cotton jeans in Düsseldorf that fit well and don’t look like a compromise? Then Unterbilk is worth the trip. Small, owner-run shops line the streets around Lorettostraße, and Carlsplatz is just under 20 minutes away on foot. In the store, you can take your time trying different cuts and washes and get advice on fit and materials. With jeans especially, trying them on pays off, because cut and wash make a big difference to the fit. If you’d rather order online, the collection is also available in the wunderwerk online shop. Note the short afternoon break; current opening hours are listed on this page.
