UMA INTIMATES was born from Marie’s sacred dream. In her early 30s, she was becoming increasingly aware of the importance of Mother Nature in our lives and our destruction of the planet through our consumption.
She was questioning her ethical and personal values! And with that, among other realisations, she discovered that buying clothes “in conventional shops” was not an option if she wanted to minimise her impact on nature and not contribute to people’s suffering.
Although she found some sustainable brands, she did not identify with any ethical, high-quality, sensual design underwear brand. She asked herself: Why give up the feeling of sensuality when wearing lingerie to save the planet?
In the last hours of a Forest Bathing workshop in Collserola, Marie was sitting on the ground in a state of deep relaxation. Suddenly, she heard his voice loud and strong in her head: “You’re going to make sustainable and beautiful lingerie! A few months ago, you saw an online course on Sustainable Fashion! Sign up!”. And so, two years later, she launched the eco-sensual lingerie brand UMA INTIMATES.
Today, Marie is accompanied by many women who help her through their wisdom and empathy, giving this project their creativity and love. UMA INTIMATES is a sacred dream among women.
Marie produces all her lingerie in a small workshop in Barcelona. Producing at home allows her to be involved in every step of the process. At the same time, she creates a working relationship and friendship with the women in the workshop. Her regular visits to the workshop and the time they spend there allow her to see first-hand that all the workers are treated with dignity and work under fair conditions without health risks.
Their materials’ origin and high quality are among their most essential pillars. For this reason, they have conducted in-depth research, visited trade fairs and contacted all the suppliers of sustainable fabrics they could find in Europe.
Their fabrics are made of TENCEL Lyocell, an artificial fibre from the cellulose of eucalyptus wood cultivated for this purpose. These plantations are sustainably managed according to the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) standard. Tencel Lyocell has antibacterial and breathable properties, and due to its elasticity and soft touch, the lingerie achieves a second-skin effect.
On the other hand, the lace is made of high-quality recycled polyamide of Italian origin. In addition, this fabric has the Global Recycled Standard certificate, which verifies the use of recycled materials and responsible manufacturing under strict social and environmental requirements, transparent and traceable.
Finally, they also use a percentage of elastic and trimmings produced locally a few kilometres from Barcelona. Both comply with STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX certification, although they are still actively seeking local suppliers of sustainable elastics and trimmings.
At UMA INTIMATES, the mission is to work hand in hand with companies that share the same ethical values and the same commitment to contribute to a humanised, circular economy.
Although their lingerie is made with different materials, which makes it difficult to recycle, UMA INTIMATES makes efforts to raise awareness so that their customers can extend the life-cycle of their products.
Also, the packaging is eco-designed to give it a second life as a multipurpose vegan leather bag.
At UMA INTIMATES, they want to empower the local economy. The brand chooses materials purchased primarily from suppliers located in Catalonia, thus avoiding excessive carbon emissions from transport.
In addition, they manufacture in a small workshop in Barcelona, which allows them to be involved in every step of the process. At the same time, it creates a working relationship and friendship with the women in the workshop.
UMA INTIMATES is a vegan brand! All its materials are free of animal products.
UMA INTIMATES designs lingerie using superior fabrics, focusing on providing long-lasting durability.
In addition, for each new collection or capsule, they open 2 weeks of pre-sales, which allows them to make a realistic sales estimate and avoid overproduction.
UMA INTIMATES believes in a paradigm shift towards a more humanised circular economy, which companies must lead as examples. Therefore, all their actions have a transparency and traceability policy.
On their website, you can find detailed information about their philosophy and sustainability endeavours, and if you are even more curious, you can always email them your questions, and they will be happy to tell you more about their brand.
In addition, COSH! has been able to talk to Marie, the founder of UMA INTIMATES, and she has provided us with the names of their suppliers, the place of manufacture and some environmental certificates, so we can assure that UMA INTIMATES is a transparent brand.
