Arí van Twillert, is led by Lidewij van Twillert, a Dutch industrial engineer turned fashion design engineer from the Netherlands. Van Twillert personally manages both design and manufacturing from her Rotterdam based studio.
The designer conducts fittings, armed with her hand-held Artec 3D scanner. She then processes the scan data in her atelier and outsources the 3D printing to her manufacturing partner, Shapeways, a digital manufacturing platform, who print the “curvearis” component in nylon, using selective laser sintering, in their manufacturing facilities in the Netherlands.
The fabric elements of the bra are cut and sewn by a seamstress in the atelier across the hallway!
Achieving the perfect harmony of innovative technology and traditional craftsmanship.
Arí van Twillert guarantees an ethical practices across the supply chain by exclusively partnering with EU suppliers, who comply with strict EU regulations.
At Arí van Twillert, the custom lingerie process begins with a 3D body scan, either at their Rotterdam studio or your home, to create a digital body model. Preferences for colour, fabric, and design are discussed. The fabric parts of the lingerie is composed of 32 pieces of various material compositions, all sourced in Europe.
Their 3D printing partner, Shapeways then design the technical blueprint, including the Curvearis, a custom-fit, 3D printed breast support in their ISO 9001-compliant manufacturing facilities in the Netherlands . The component is printed in nylon, a synthetic polymer, widely used for its strength and elasticity. Although its production can be energy-intensive and contribute to environmental concerns, the “curvearis” component of the bra can be removed when the material components are worn out and reconstructed into a new bra.
Back in the studio, a prototype garment (toile) is created for fitting, ensuring design and comfort satisfaction. Once approved, the final bra is sewn by expert seamstresses.
The finished product is available for studio collection or personal home delivery.
The brand avoids plastics in their packaging, opting for recycled cardboard and paper. Their gift boxes are crafted from FSC-certified cardboard and paper and are deliberately unlabelled to encourage reuse for storage or as gift boxes.
Arí van Twillert adopts circular business strategies, through garment reuse, repair services free of charge, and a zero overproduction philosophy.
Garments with the Curvearis, can be sent back if the elastics have worn out. The brand will inspect whether the Curvearis can be reused in your new garment to minimise material use.
