Sproet & Sprout

To ensure that all their products are made ethically, Sproet & Sprout only works with manufacturers selected and monitored by BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative). These manufacturers must comply with the BSCI code of conduct regarding working conditions, fair wages and worker protection. 

A large proportion of Sproet & Sprout products have the GOTS certificate (Global Organic Textile Standard). Besides the use of organic cotton, this certificate also checks the working conditions in the production process. So you can be sure that these products are made in ethical conditions.

Much of the Sproet & Sprout collection is made of cotton. The brand uses conventional cotton as well as the more sustainable BCI cotton (Better Cotton Initiative) and GOTS-certified organic cotton. In addition, Sproet & Sprout promises to use more and more organic cotton in the future. This is more sustainable because no chemicals are allowed to be used in the production process. Much less irrigation water is also needed to grow organic cotton than the conventional variety. 

The brand also uses many other materials including wool, acrylic, polyester, nylon and mohair. Synthetic materials such as polyester and nylon are not sustainable as many harmful chemicals are required in production.

Sproet & Sprout uses packaging material made of recycled plastic. Apart from that, the brand also donates a fixed amount to the Trees for All foundation as CO2 compensation for every parcel shipped.

Sproet & Sprout uses different synthetic materials in their collection, garments made from a mono-material such as 100% polyester are easy to recycle after use and is therefore fairly circular.

A garment made from 100% natural materials, such as cotton, is even more sustainable. This is because synthetic clothing has the risk that microplastics can be released during washing. So COSH! recommends always washing synthetic clothes in a GuppyFriend, a laundry bag that traps microplastics.

Sproet & Sprout also have designs in their collection made of material blends, such as a mix of organic cotton and elastane. This is harder to recycle, but a small percentage of elastane is tolerable in knits.

The Sproet & Sprout collection is produced in several countries including India, China, Hong Kong and Turkey. This means the brand has a long supply chain.

Sproet & Sprout are using materials of animal origin in their designs. The brand’s designs include wool, mohair and alpaca wool. Unfortunately, the brand does not provide information on the origin of these materials. As a result, COSH! Not estimate how animal-friendly the brand is.

Sproet & Sprout designs from the principle ​‘Made to last’. The brand opts for high-quality materials and production techniques. To extend the lifespan of their clothes, the brand also promotes the re-wear of children’s clothes. Sproet & Sprout therefore designs their clothes with the prospect of multiple children enjoying them.

Even though this cool children’s brand is doing well on sustainability, it still has some work points on transparency. For example, Sproet & Sprout gives little information on the origin of the materials used. This makes it difficult to verify how sustainable, ethical and animal-friendly the collection is.
