Fabienne Chapot’s head office is located in Amsterdam. Here, the collections are designed by the in-house design team. For production, the brand works with several manufacturers in China, India, Turkey, Portugal, Macedonia, Italy and Morocco.
Fabienne Chapot only works with production partners who are members of BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative). This is an organisation that helps companies build an ethical supply chain. This includes checking production sites for ethical working conditions and fair pay.
In the future, Fabienne Chapot also plans to check further suppliers such as fabric factories, dyeing plants and printing plants. Moreover, the brand signed the Dutch Sustainable Clothing and Textiles Agreement in 2018. The established policy around this was also included in their code of conduct.
Finally, the fashion brand collaborates with Dutch charity 46Dresses. This is an organisation that fights poverty by giving women in financially vulnerable situations a new wardrobe.
Fabienne Chapot uses a variety of materials in their clothing. Some of these are not sustainable, such as polyester, conventional cotton, viscose and elastane. However, the brand is committed to increasingly replacing these materials with more sustainable alternatives.
For example, Fabienne Chapot also uses recycled polyester made from recycled PET bottles. This material seems much more sustainable, but is not always so. Want to know more about recycled PET in your clothes? Then read the COSH! Polyester research.
The brand also opts for organic cotton in several garments. The cotton has the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) which indicates that at least 95% of the material must be organic. Organic means that no chemicals are used in the cotton’s production process.
Finally, Fabienne Chapot also uses a lot of viscose in their collections. This is a semi-synthetic material based on vegetable raw materials. Unfortunately, this material does not have a sustainable production process. Therefore, Fabienne Chapot wants to replace this material with Ecovero Viscose. This is a sustainable viscose variety from the manufacturer Lenzing. The material is more sustainable as no chemicals can be released due to the closed-loop production process. Also, the raw materials come from sustainably managed forests and the process uses less water than that of regular viscose.
Since Fabienne Chapot often uses a blend of different materials in its clothes, the brand is less circular. This actually makes it much more difficult to recycle the clothes after use.
The Dutch brand does want to promote circular business models and therefore collaborates with the clothing library Spinning Closet. This way, you can also rent your favourite dress instead of buying it!
Fabienne Chapot does not have a short supply chain as production takes place at different factories in India, China and Turkey. The brand also works with suppliers in Macedonia, Italy, Portugal and Morocco.
Fabienne Chapot collections contain animal materials such as wool and leather. The brand uses only mulesing-free wool. This means no skin is cut away from the animals, a painful practice used to prevent parasite infections.
Other animal-unfriendly materials are banned from the collections. For example, the brand does not use fur, angora, mohair, down or exotic animal species. As for the leather used in the accessories there is unfortunately no information.
Fabienne Chapot makes colourful and powerful women’s fashion. This also includes accessories, shoes and bags. The brand launches a new collection twice a year, which is sold in almost 1,000 shops worldwide.
The brand aims to put the spotlight on women with colourful, cheerful and bold outfits. The prints are always designed by hand to create unique designs. The collection features everything from dresses and jackets to cardigans and trousers. The brand also offers a six-month warranty on every purchase.
Fabienne Chapot works well on their transparency by sharing information via their website. For example, the brand shares their code of conduct, supplier list and an annual sustainability report.
