When Salt of the Earth began, the products were made in a tea urn in the kitchen at home. Now there is a factory set up specifically to make natural deodorants in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire, UK. This gives the brand direct control over quality, while also providing local employment. The factory produces 85% of the products. The crystal deodorant is produced in China. The deodorant and hand soap are then sold in more than 30 countries around the world!

On ingredients, Salt of the Earth says the following: ​“We truly believe that natural ingredients are better. Better for you and better for the environment. That’s why the entire Salt of the Earth range uses ingredients of 100% natural origin.” The brand backs up this statement with COSMOS certification. The COSMOS standard guarantees that it has been independently verified that the ingredients pose no risk to human and environmental health, and that they have been produced responsibly and with respect for the environment. The brand’s ingredients are derived from plants and naturally occurring minerals, including fragrances from essential oils and botanical extracts. Some ingredients are organic.

An important part of Salt of the Earth’s focus on sustainability is developing packaging that can be reused and refilled. As such, they were one of the first companies to come out with deodorant refills in 2013. Since its launch, they have sold enough of these refills to save the equivalent of half a million individual plastic bottles. 

By 2020, the brand switched to more sustainable packaging for its best-selling natural deodorant sprays. All sprays are now packaged in bottles with 50% recycled plastic (PCR) and 50% sugarcane-based biopolymer. 2020 also brought the launch of a range of plastic-free natural deodorant balms: packaged in a recyclable glass jar (made from recycled materials) with a metal lid and a sustainable grass paper label. The brand has more plastic-free options, for those who want to reduce their plastic use. The plastic-free crystal stick is packaged in a 100% recyclable cardboard box. The plastic-free refills are made of FSC cardboard and greaseproof paper, labelled with grass paper.

Most products are developed and made in the United Kingdom. Some products are unfortunately made in China, which significantly lengthens their supply chain.

Fortunately, the brand puts green energy first. Its manufacturing and office location in the UK is powered by 100% renewable energy. In 2020, they partnered with Ecologi, an organization that funds climate projects worldwide. With this, the brand seeks to reduce its impact on the environment!

All Salt of the Earth products are vegan, certified by both the Vegan Society and the Vegetarian Society.

Moreover, the brand believes that personal care products should be animal-free. As such, they are proud that all products are approved by the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny program. This global program sets animal-testing standards beyond legal requirements. The brand monitors its suppliers to ensure that all products continue to meet Leaping Bunny criteria. The supplier monitoring system is also independently audited.
