Konges Sløjd knows the big role in their sustainability approach played by the people involved in their production processes. To ensure fair working conditions, the brand set up the following strategy: From 2022, they are a member of Amfori BSCI, an organisation dedicated to social compliance and better working conditions within the companies involved. This membership is especially important in regard to the Asian suppliers the brand works with because it helps ensure equity and safety in those factories – let’s not forget this area of the world scores among the lowest when it comes to workplace conditions and wages.

They also ensure their suppliers follow GOTS, SA8000 and Sedex guidelines in their facilities.

Moreover, the brand carries out audits during the initial, middle, and final stages of the production. A good approach is to make sure the suppliers follow good practices long-term. Most of their suppliers are located in India, China, Turkey, and sometimes Australia, with whom they have daily contact.

To be a sustainable brand, you must ensure the materials you outsource derive from sustainable sources or follow strict requirements. 

Konges Sløjd adopts both strategies and, therefore, does its best to use more organic cotton, with an increasing proportion of GOTS-certified cotton collection after collection; they also use polyester due to the specifics of this material, but they strive to use more and more recycled polyester. Other materials in their collections include BIONIC-FINISH® ECO, a coating alternative free from hazardous chemicals – including PFCs – and THERMOLITE® EcoMade, an insulating fibre perfect for keeping your baby warm. 

Nonetheless, at COSH! we are unsure of its composition base since the developer LYCRA says it could be made from either 100% PET bottles or 100% textile waste – which one of the two makes up the one used by Konges Sløjd is not known. But check here for more info about PET in your clothes. 

Since all suppliers are OEKO-TEX® 100 standard certified, fabrics are dyed after these guidelines, meaning no chemicals or hazardous substances in your children’s clothes. Well done!

Business models help your brand shift towards the best planet-friendly practices, but how does Konges Sløjd get there? 

The brand has many certifications guaranteeing its efforts in this sense. They are GOTS and FSC certified, meaning their most used materials are good for the environment while being gentle to your children’s skin and health. Moreover, most of their garments are made entirely of these materials, making those mono-material pieces easier to recycle at their end-of-life stage.

The brand strives to last beyond one generation, though, so all designs are thought to be timeless and easy to pass on from one sibling to another for generations to come. 

A circular tactic worth mentioning is the use of overstock materials and fabric scraps for sampling their future collections.

They also reuse the original boxes sent from their suppliers and use recycled poly bags, which use is minimised as much as possible.

Regarding the supply chain, Konges Sløjd can’t be described as a short-supply-chain brand. Its suppliers are mainly located in Asia and Australia in some cases, while the headquarters are in Denmark. It is a long way to the European market, even longer if you consider they also deliver to the US.

The brand is RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certified, making it animal-friendly because outsourcing feathers and down harms no ducks or geese. Moreover, they also use merino wool in their collections, whose origin needs to be specified.

The brand seeks to last beyond one season. Thus, everything you can shop from them is made of durable and high-quality materials, which greatly focuses on providing you with everything you may need in your child’s first years.

Although the brand strives for continuous improvement, its transparency communication could be more precise. 

We appreciate the certification disclosure because it’s easily verifiable. Nonetheless, some materials for non-clothing products are not effortlessly listed – but you can check if they comply with EU toys legislation, for example.

Moreover, the suppliers are absent on the website, and we would appreciate it if they were since it would be easier for consumers to evaluate their purchase sustainability if they could verify where the garments come from.
By disclosing their suppliers, Konges Sløjd would also allow for easier verification of working conditions, wage pay and other social and ecological requirements.

We happily checked the ​“product recall” section, where the brand lists details on certain products for which safety concerns have come to light.
