The climate crisis is an emergency that we must act on immediately.
Rising temperatures. Disappearance of the polar ice caps. Danger of survival of many species. Hurricanes. Floods. Polluted waters. Spread of diseases. Rising sea levels. Forced migration. Millions of refugees from climate disasters. Droughts. Famines. Uncontrolled fires.
These are some of the effects of climate change on our planet. A climate change that is already present, seen, heard and suffered. And even today, it continues to be nurtured by large corporations and policies that govern the world, by thousands of companies that are committed to continue increasing their production and profits rather than changing their business model to one that is more sustainable and respectful of the environment, people and all living beings.
The textile industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world. Its ecological footprint is far from sustainable. According to a report by WWF Switzerland, this industry is responsible for emitting 1.7 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, and 20% of the toxins that are dumped into the water worldwide come from its factories and crops.
Today, fast fashion sales continue to increase year after year, more than 80 billion garments are sold worldwide annually, producing 2.1 billion tons of waste.
Climatologists from around the world have shown that the Earth’s climate is changing and that humans are primarily responsible. Unless we take immediate action, this trend will continue at an accelerating pace, leading us to a state of climate catastrophe.
It is in everyone’s hands to tackle the problem and stand up to it. Here are some actions you can take to stop climate change and its chain of reactions that will soon be irreversible.
Manifest yourself
Every Friday the Fridays For Future movement led by Greta Thunberg organizes demonstrations in major cities around the world to protest against the lack of action in the face of the climate crisis, as well as the Rebellion extinction movement, and many others. There’s also the Rebellion Extinction movement, and so many others – look for the ones in your city and join them!
Vote with a conscience
In order to change the world you need to change the people who run it, and the laws. Use your power in the next elections to read well the electoral program and plans of each political party, and vote for those who will implement environmental policies.
Consume products that respect the planet
Consumption is the place where we personally act. In all areas of all categories there are companies that do things right. That respect human rights and the environment. Bet on them, on new, green and renewable technologies, and on responsible consumption.
Dress ethically and sustainably
There are many clothing and footwear brands that work with sustainable materials and respect animals and the environment throughout the production chain of their garments. Look for them. COSH! can help you to get to know them and find a responsible piece of clothing or shop.
Share and talk about what matters to you
There is nothing more powerful than a group of people united and convinced that change is possible. Share with your friends and family what you learn about the climate crisis and what each of us can do. And encourage them to join you when you go to rallies, vote and shop.
The time to act is now.
