Discover your skin type
The colour of your skin type is determined by melanin. Melanin is a biological pigment in the body that produces hair, eye and skin pigmentation. The more melanin you produce, the darker your eyes, hair and skin will be. The amount of melanin in your body depends on a number of different factors, including genetics and how much sun exposure your ancestors had.
There are two types of melanin: eumelanin, which gives the skin a brown colour when exposed to the sun, and pheomelanin, which gives the skin a red colour when exposed to the sun (burn). The more time you spend in the sun, the more melanin you produce. But too much sun exposure increases your pheomelanin levels, which burns the skin, destroys the protective skin barrier and increases the risk of skin cancer. It is therefore very important, regardless of your skin type, to properly protect your skin against the sun with sunscreen. There are six different skin types:
Type I: Very fair skin, always burns, never tans
Type II: Light skin, (almost) always burns, sometimes tans
Type III: Medium skin, burns very occasionally, (almost) always tans
Type IV: Olive skin, rarely burns, always tans
Type V: Brown skin, never burns, always tans
Type VI: Black skin, never burns, always tans
