The Knitwit Stable is Reina Ovinge’s farm, which also houses a knitting studio. After 20 years of experience in the fashion industry, she decided in 2013, after visiting China, that she wanted to improve the industry. She saw how fashion was becoming faster, cheaper and more harmful. With The Knitwit Stable, Reina aims to bring insight and transparency to the production of clothing, while at the same time respecting people, animals and the environment.
On her farm, Reina breeds angora goats and merino sheep. The wool from these animals is processed into more sustainable yarns and finished products in the knitting studio. Working with fellow breeders and Dutch sheep farmers, she also collects sheep, alpaca and mohair wool. This more sustainably produced wool results in stylish and conscious products.
With her own brand, The Knitwit Label, she makes sweaters, cardigans, scarves and hats from her own wool. They work with an online “made-to-order” principle, which means that production starts only after an order is placed. This prevents unnecessary stocks and waste.
