Working Conditions & living wages
Garment production in Turkey holds some challenges. When it comes to labour and ethics, concern lies with the possible exploitation of labour. Timboo stated that they enforce audits by themselves regularly to ensure fair and safe working conditions in compliance with labour laws.
Materials
- Viscose (bamboo)
- Cotton
- Polyester
- Elastane
Bamboo yarn holds antibacterial properties, making it ideal for baby products. Because of these properties, bamboo textiles can be perfectly hygienic by washing them at 40 °C. Washing at a lower temperature also protects the natural properties of the bamboo fibre.
Packaging
- Packages are sent in carton boxes, most of the packaging material is made of carton.
- The brand tries to avoid plastic as much as possible, but feels it has to prioritize hygienic handling of each product.
- The clothes hang on carton hangers and have carton garment tags.
Water usage & chemicals
The use of bamboo viscose holds great advantages. Bamboo can grow without the use of pesticides or fertilisers. However, the during the production process of viscose fibres, a lot of harmful chemicals are used to process wood pulp into textile filaments. Without certification proof it is not sure that these chemicals are 100% filtered out of the wastewater.
Each product carries the OEKE-Tex 100 label. This means the garments are harmless to human health and have been heavily tested in compliance with international requirements and regulations.
Circular product design
Most products are made with material blends, which make for a harder recycling process. The brand uses mostly plant-based materials, and only uses synthetics to create a stronger more durable, or stretchy fabric.
Circular business models
While the brand doesn’t have its own resale option, products are designed to last a long time and are often resold or regifted when babies grow out of their garments. The brand could look into their own resell service.
Distance & complexity of the supply chain
- Production locations: Turkey
- Materials: Turkey
- HQ is located in Denderhoutem, Belgium
- Sells/exports in these countries: Europe and South Korea
Having both the materials and production in Turkey ensures efficiency in the supply chain when it comes to transportation. Other than the sales in South Korea the supply chain is quite simple.
Transportation
- Transportation in the supply chain:
The brand tries to group shipments as much as possible to limit unnecessary transportation. The brand tries to limit orders to retailers to once a week to avoid unnecessary transport
- Transportation in e‑commerce: DPD
The brand has looked into eco delivery methods but hasn’t found an option that ensures customer satisfaction.
Retailers are asked to bring their returned items to showroom meetings or give them to representatives to limit transportation.
The brand doesn’t use any animal derived materials and can therefore be classified as vegan.
Product design
The brand sells bonnets, headbands, babysuits, (bandana) bibs (with sleeves), body’s (short & long sleeves), poncho’s, multi season sleeping bags, car seat -, changing pad – and bouncer covers, play pen mats, fitted sheets, (hooded) towels, reusable soft wipes and pads, wash cloths, and bathrobes for all ages.
Slow fashion processes
The brand has a steady collection which they gradually add new colours to.
They don’t take part is sales periods, but do occasionally offer a stock sale, even for fabrics.
Transparency on product
Each product page shows the materials used and applicable certifications (OEKO-TEX Standard 100).
Transparency on processes
We would love to see some more information about suppliers and processes on the website. Timboo did disclose the production of both garments and fabrics in Turkey with COSH!.
Conclusion
These timeless and durable children’s essentials are ideal for keeping your family and loved ones comfortable and colourful. While we here at COSH! are a fan of the use of bamboo fibres, we would like to see some more transparency regarding the origins of materials.
