WORKING CONDITIONS & LIVING WAGES
Since 2007, Texeler products have been made at their factory in the Netherlands, on the Texel island. Texeler states that here advanced machinery and considerable craftsmanship are used to transform wool into their range of sleeping comfort products.
MATERIALS
- Wool
- Organic cotton
- Silk
- Satin
- Tencel
Wool is the foundation of all of Texeler’s products. This is a more sustainable material as it is a renewable resource: after shearing, the sheep naturally grows a new fleece. It is, however, often cited as having a significant environmental impact as sheep farming produces greenhouse gases, and demands expansive pastures. You can find out more about the sustainability of wool here.
Organic cotton, silk, satin, or Tencel are used as covers for Texeler’s products. Tencel is a man-made, plant-based fibre, made from FSC-certified wood pulp. Texeler state that they use Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton in their Green Dream range.
Texeler do not disclose where they source their satin from or what exactly it is made from on their website. Satin does not refer to a specific fibre, and it can be made from various materials including silk, polyester, nylon, or cotton.
PACKAGING
Texeler does not disclose what packaging materials are used on their website.
WATER USAGE & CHEMICALS
Texeler states that their Texel sheep graze on pastures which have not been treated with pesticides. They also state that the covers on their products are tested according to the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, to ensure that they are free from harmful chemicals.
Texeler takes even greater care to reduce their chemical usage in their Green Dream range. They state that the wool used is washed with only natural agents, and GOTS certified organic cotton is used. Organic cotton is free from harmful chemicals or pesticides, and requires less water to produce.
CIRCULAR PRODUCT DESIGN
Texeler states that wool is recyclable, so these products are less likely to generate waste at the end of their lifespan.
CIRCULAR BUSINESS MODELS
Texeler does not currently share any circular business models on their website.
DISTANCE & COMPLEXITY OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN
Production locations:
- The Netherlands
Texeler has a relatively short and simple supply chain as they source their wool locally from Texel sheep, and process it at their factory which is also located on the Texel Island, off the coast of the Netherlands. Texeler carries the Waddengoud regional quality mark, and the Genuine Texel Product mark, ensuring that their products originate from this region.
Nearly 1,000 stores throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany carry the Texeler sleep collection.
TRANSPORTATION
Texeler does not share what transportation methods are used in their supply chain. However, as their wool is both sourced from and processed in the Netherlands, transportation related emissions are reduced.
- Wool
- Silk
Texeler states that they source their wool from Texel sheep. According to Texeler, as their products bear the Waddengoud regional quality mark, respect for animal welfare is ensured.
Silk fibres are made by silkworms. Its production is sometimes viewed as unethical, as in conventional silk production the silkworms are boiled alive to obtain the silk thread. More animal friendly alternatives are organic silk or peace silk, but Texeler does not disclose which they use.
PRODUCT DESIGN
Texeler products have a five-year guarantee, helping to ensure they will last. What’s more, Texeler state that wool itself has a long lifespan of 80 years!
Texeler products are also customisable, helping to ensure that they are kept for longer. Zips allow you to adjust the height of your pillow to your liking. Additionally, their Special Satin and four-season duvets consist of two parts with different weights, which are easily zipped together or separated. This makes them ideal for use in different seasons.
SLOW FASHION PROCESSES
Texeler is a slow fashion brand; they have a small collection of items and do not follow trends.
TRANSPARENCY ON PRODUCT
Each product page states what materials the item is made from, and as every item is manufactured at their facility in the Netherlands, you’ll always know exactly where your product was made.
TRANSPARENCY ON PROCESSES
Texeler provides detailed written information and videos about their production processes. They do not, however, disclose where the materials for their covers are sourced from.
Conclusion
Sleep soundly with Texeler. This brand offers bedding made primarily from wool; both sourced and processed on the Texel island. Wool absorbs moisture and ‘breathes’ it out, making it an excellent antiperspirant and perfect for bedding. It’s also lightweight, and temperature regulating, helping you to get the best quality of sleep.
