The fabrics used by Poppy Field are made in Indonesia and then brought to their own workshop in Bali. The brand works with local communities to create jobs and revive textile craftsmanship. For the knitwear collection, Poppy Field collaborates with Italian and Belgian manufacturers.
Poppy Field collaborates with the non-profit organisation Bali WISE to train and mentor young women. In this way, the brand helps combat poverty in Indonesia and develop sustainable communities.
Poppy Field uses a variety of materials in their collection. Most of these are natural materials such as cotton, linen, viscose and wool. For several years, the brand has been using cotton that has the BCI label (Better Cotton Initiative). This label ensures that the cotton is produced with fewer chemicals and in good social conditions. Poppy Field now wants to switch to GOTS-certified cotton (Global Organic Textile Standard). This cotton is organic and produced without chemicals. This too audits social conditions in production.
In addition, the timeless brand also uses viscose ecovero and cupro in their collection. Ecovero is a sustainable viscose from the manufacturer Lenzing. It is made from wood pulp that comes from sustainably managed forests and therefore has the FSC label (Forest Stewardship Council). Lenzing uses a closed-loop production process to prevent the possible release of chemicals.
Cupro is made in a similar way to viscose, but using cotton scraps instead of wood pulp. This is therefore a sustainable material because it’s made from recycled excess materials. In doing so, Poppy Field guarantees that this material too is produced in a closed loop.
Other natural materials in the Poppy collection include linen, hemp, wool, mohair and soon the brand will add ramie to the collection. Yet, there are also some synthetic materials incorporated into the clothes. This is noticeable in the knitwear collection, where wool is combined with acrylic and polyamide.
Lastly, Poppy Field also takes other actions to improve their sustainability. The brand uses for instancebiodegradable packaging for all their shipments. Additionally, the brand collaborates with the local Balinese non-profit organisation R.O.L.E. The organization strives to prevent ocean pollution by land-based waste. They do this partly by educating local people and reducing the use of plastics
Poppy Field’s clothes are mostly made of mono-materials. This means that only one material is used in a garment. This makes the garment easier to recycle after use. Because most of the clothes are made of natural materials, the clothes have no risk of releasing microplastics when washed.
Unfortunately, the knitwear does contain synthetic materials. However, this is necessary to ensure the quality of the knits. The combination of natural wool and synthetic materials such as polyamide ensures that the clothes keep their shape. This mix is usually easier to separate, and recycle, in a knitted garment than in woven clothing. Knits also require less frequent washing, which reduces the risk of microplastics.
Because Poppy Field doesn’t offer a repair service or second-hand sales, the brand is not fully circular.
The collections are designed at the Poppy Field headquarters in Paris. The woven fabrics are made in Indonesia, as is the clothing itself. Poppy Field has its own production studio in Bali where the clothes are sewn. The clothes then go to Paris for sale.
Theknitted jumpers and cardigans are also designed in Paris, then produced in Europe. Poppy Field collaborates with an Italian spinning mill and a Belgian manufacturer for the knitwear collections.
As mentioned earlier, Poppy Field uses sheep’s wool and mohair in their knitwear collection. The wool is sourced from Turkey and South Africa. To take animal welfare into account, Poppy uses materials that have the RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) and RMS (Responsible Mohair Standard) labels. Read more about wol animal welfare and the different certificates of wool in our blog.
Poppy Field designs timeless fashion in a cheerful and colourful style. The brand draws inspiration from Indonesian culture and nature. Both the men’s and women’s collections follow Poppy Field’s recognisable bohemian style.
The French-Indonesian brand follows their own rhythm and releases a new collection only twice a year. These collections always consist of no more than 35 designs, and are also made in smaller quantities. The clothes go into production only after the various retailers place their orders. This way, Poppy Field ensures that no excess stock is produced.
Although Poppy Field does provide the countries where the clothes are produced, the brand is not very transparent. Not much is known about the producers themselves. Similarly, little is known about the production workshop in Indonesia. Consequently, it is not entirely clear in what social conditions the clothes are made.
