All rainwear is made in production facilities in Hebei Province, a region that, according to MAIUM, is known for its expertise in technical outerwear and waterproof manufacturing.

Working conditions & wages

MAIUM states that it works with BSCI-audited factories. According to the brand, the factories achieve an A rating, the highest score, in 50% of the audited areas. An independent scan by RethinkRebels from 2022 concluded that, at that time, 75% of the production partners were BSCI members. The brand’s goal is 100%.

The brand states that it visits its factories at least once a year and follows the OECD due diligence methodology and the ILO conventions. According to MAIUM, all suppliers should have signed its own Code of Conduct by the end of 2026.

Materials

• Recycled polyester (RPET) from post-consumer plastic bottles
• Recycled nylon, mainly from post-industrial waste such as weaving offcuts
• PU coating, according to the brand potentially biodegradable
• TPU lamination for breathable models
• Silver lamination (PU with aluminium powder) on the ponchos
• Bionic-Finish Eco as a fluorocarbon-free water-repellent finish

According to MAIUM, the rain jackets are made from 90% post-consumer recycled plastic. The suppliers are said to be GRS certified, and MAIUM claims to check the GRS certification with every production run. The brand itself is not yet GRS certified, but says it aims to be from 2026.

Good to know: according to the brand, recycled polyester and nylon save CO2 compared with virgin material, but they remain petroleum-based synthetic fibres that can shed microplastics when washed. MAIUM does not communicate anything about this. 

The claim that the PU coating is potentially biodegradable is not backed up by the brand with any evidence or certificate.

Packaging

MAIUM does not publish any information about packaging in e‑commerce or in the supply chain.

Water use & chemicals

The brand states that all jackets are PFAS-free and PVC-free. According to MAIUM, the Bionic-Finish Eco water-repellent finish is free from fluorocarbons, formaldehyde and kerosene. MAIUM also states that its certified fabrics are produced without harmful substances. However, the brand does not name which certificates these are.

There is no information about water use or the dyeing of the fabrics.

Circular product design

MAIUM focuses on longevity: detailed care instructions, water-repellent zips and the advice to repair jackets rather than replace them. 

According to the brand, customers can carry out small repairs themselves. For larger repairs, the brand recommends a tailor.

The jackets are mainly made from recycled polyester and nylon with a PU or TPU coating. Coated fabrics are difficult to recycle at the end of their life.

Circular business model

MAIUM has no in-house repair service, no take-back scheme and no resale or rental model.

There is a 1‑year guarantee on manufacturing defects.

According to the brand, the seasonal collection is only produced on the basis of actual orders, to avoid overproduction and deadstock.

According to the 2022 RethinkRebels scan, the fabric and garment manufacturers are 100% traceable, and raw material processing is 60% traceable. The brand aims for 100% traceability up to Tier 4 by the end of 2027.

Transport

• MAIUM does not publish any information about how the products are transported from China to Europe or how e‑commerce shipping is handled.
• The brand states that it carried out a CO2 baseline measurement in 2021 and works with Eden: People+Planet on reforestation projects. Important: offsetting does not truly cancel out emissions and is no substitute for reductions in the supply chain.

According to the brand, no animal-derived materials are used in production.

Product design

MAIUM designs timeless, functional rainwear for men, women and children: raincoats, parkas, puffers, ponchos, bags and accessories.

Thanks to side zips, many models transform into a poncho shape when cycling. Most jackets have taped seams and, according to the brand, a water column of up to 10,000 mm. There is no information about inclusive sizing.

Slow fashion processes

Part of the collection is permanent and carries over from season to season. According to MAIUM, the seasonal collection is only produced on the basis of real orders.

Product transparency

On every product page, customers can find technical details such as water column, breathability, materials and care instructions. However, customers cannot trace in which factory a specific product was made.

Process transparency

Although the producers are based in China and therefore geographically far from the headquarters in Amsterdam, this distance is partly offset by audits and control mechanisms. The brand works with BSCI-audited factories, visits them at least once a year according to its own statements, and follows the OECD due diligence methodology and the ILO conventions.

The brand refers to the 2022 RethinkRebels scan and has announced brand-level GRS certification from 2026.
