LEV’01’s entire production process is localized in Portugal, where both the components like heels and soles are supplied and assembled. This centralized production strategy allows the brand to maintain close oversight of the manufacturing processes, ensuring that ethical practices are upheld consistently. The brand’s commitment to ethical production is reinforced by the adherence to strict EU regulations on workplace practices, which are among the most rigorous globally.

LEV’01 is dedicated to sustainability, primarily using natural materials in their footwear. The collection features 100% wool and vegetable-tanned leather, avoiding harmful chemicals. Additional components include recycled rubber and heels crafted from recycled wood, with plans to transition nose reinforcements from recycled rubber to vegetable-based materials.

To minimize overproduction, LEV’01 employs a subscription model where customers can order designs in advance, contributing to a reduction in waste and ensuring that production aligns closely with demand. This approach not only supports sustainability but also enhances the brand’s commitment to responsible fashion. 

Packaging -

Currently, packaging utilizes unbleached cardboard boxes, avoiding plastic completely.

Water usage & chemicals -

The brand is actively seeking biologically-based adhesives to further reduce the environmental impact and move towards fully organic and eco-friendly products. 

Circular product design -

LEV’01 integrates circular principles effectively in their footwear production. The brand utilizes heels made from recycled wood and incorporates recycled rubber for additional components. Importantly, the design of the shoes facilitates easy disassembly, which is crucial for recycling efforts at the end of the product’s life.

Most of the materials used in LEV’01 footwear are natural and hence, in theory, biodegradable, aligning with circular economy principles by reducing the environmental impact when the products are eventually discarded.

Besides the circular product design, the brand does not have any circular business models set in place.

Distance & complexity of the supply chain -

LEV’01 operates with a relatively short supply chain, centered in Europe. The brand’s headquarters are located in the Netherlands, and all production and assembly processes take place in Portugal. The leather used in LEV’01’s products is sourced from Portugal, further consolidating the supply chain and minimizing the transportation distances involved. 

Transportation –

For transportation, the brand primarily uses lorries, which suggests road transport is the main method for moving goods between Portugal and the Netherlands.

Customers can subscribe to a model, which involves a waiting period of up to six months and an advance payment, ensuring that each piece is desired and valued. Made-to-measure options are available, offering an even more personalized product at a higher price point and longer production time. Sales are conducted directly through Instagram or a contact form, reinforcing a deliberate and thoughtful purchasing process by the customers.
