Green Future of Travel – How Berlin leads the way in urban sustainability
Urban areas are attractive places to live as well as to visit. Being confronted with climate change the results of Booking.com’s travel report 2019 are not surprising: 87 % of tourists want to travel more sustainably and 72 % of the global travellers are seeking authentic experiences in the local culture. To drive change forward and to offer travellers more possibilities to travel in a responsible and mindful way, it is important to communicate and work together at all levels concerning the development of green cities.
On our tours we are connecting tourists and local change makers, showing the behind the scenes of local, sustainable businesses. We are convinced this authentic connection will lead to an increased awareness in consumption habits.
visitBerlin is one of our supporters for this year’s Green Fashion Tours Map. Active since 1992 visitBerlin’s mission is to combine tourism with other environmental topics to create a more liveable city. “We like the concept of Green Fashion Tours because it bundles two ideas we also stand for; the idea of respectful tourism and the promotion of responsible fashion labels. That is how future should be for tourism in Berlin”, say Annegret Zimmermann and Josefine Köhn-Haskins at visitBerlin.
Berlin already has a lot to offer when it comes to sustainability
With the 2020 campaign “Berlin Nature” visitBerlin showcases the numerous green spaces in the city. Urban farming, parks and gardens, as well as green fashion and vegan gastronomy have changed the former industrial city of Berlin into an ever-increasing metropolis.
Visitors can find organic food and fair fashion in each of Berlin’s unique neighbourhoods. And those looking for sustainable activities, this list of tips helps to get an overview. Every neighbourhood has its own green oasis – from its share of the city’s approx. 70,000 community gardens to the vast Tempelhofer Feld Park, the many parks and gardens or the huge area of Grunewald. Across Berlin, there is a wealth of open spaces for jogging and relaxing, kite surfing and picnics, neighbourhood gardening or just doing your thing.
Many initiatives and green start-ups are pointing the way to a greener and more liveable city. One example: With their CityTree, GreenCity Solutions have created green city furniture, which is a designer object, seating and a biotech filter all in one. The CityTree combines the ability of moss species to bind fine dust and nitrous gases with IoT technologies to measure environmental data in real time. In contrast, Solaga utilises microalgae to design biofilms as air filters, either to decorate interior spaces or for green facades.
To organize sustainable events and congresses, visitBerlin created a platform where you can find all the information you need to drive forward sustainability in the MICE sector. The experts at visitBerlin are always happy to share sustainable travel tips. With offers like Bahnhit or the BerlinWelcomeCard travellers can visit the German capital with the lowest possible carbon footprint.
