Dive into the world of the fashion label Hul le Kes, where imperfection in both humans and products is embraced. Designers Sjaak Hullekes and Sebastiaan Kramer focus on changing the current fashion system, placing the human capacities of care, creation, empathy, and aesthetics at its core.
Drawn to the life of an antiquarian, Sjaak Hullekes weaves his love for art, antiques, textiles, and humanity into contemporary fashion. This is evident in the reuse of materials. Over 95% of the collection is made from high-quality existing materials, such as antique linens from France, overstock fabrics from Germany and the Netherlands, and vintage fabrics from antique markets and recycling centers. Hul le Kes consciously chooses to reuse materials, not only from a sustainability perspective but also because it gives each garment a unique signature. Wear traces and imperfections are full of stories that the wearer can relive.
His partner Sebastiaan Kramer brings his fascination for non-Western cultures and inclusivity to life within the fashion label. The collections are centered around the wearer, without considering gender or size. Many unisex garments are photographed on both men and women, and they approach sizing in a different, much broader way. It is up to you whether you want to wear a garment oversized or fitted.
They are also working on innovative strategies that redefine business management. All clothing is locally and carefully made in their own studio in Arnhem: the Manufacturing Studio. This ensures more transparency in the production process and allows Hul le Kes to revive craftsmanship and creativity within the fashion industry in the Netherlands. Another inspiring initiative is the Recovery Studio, a place where garments are given new life through (visible) repair and dyeing with natural pigments.
