Studio Wunderbar was born out of a standstill. When Covid-19 brought film productions to a halt in 2020, costume designer Martina turned to her workshop and started making things. Not for a production. Just for herself, from whatever was at hand: old scarves, worn blankets, forgotten fabrics.
What started as a way to fill the days became something she couldn’t put down. Studio Wunderbar officially opened, and it has been running alongside her costume work ever since.
Every coat in the collection starts not with a sketch, but with a material. Martina works with preloved wool blankets, deadstock upholstery fabric, vintage tablecloths, items people send her, things picked up at second-hand markets, and materials she already has at home. That means each piece is genuinely one of a kind. Once a material is gone, it’s gone.
Production is small on purpose. Martina makes everything herself, occasionally with a friend who comes to help. Everything is made in the Netherlands. There is no factory, no bulk run, no offshore production. The collection is almost entirely focused on winter pieces; around 90% of what Studio Wunderbar makes is designed for colder months, with coats as the signature item.
The shapes range from long and elegant to short and playful. You’ll find kimono-inspired cuts, structured overcoats, and everything in between. What they share is the same careful finish and the knowledge that no one else owns the same coat.
If you are looking for something that was made with care, from materials that already had a life before this one, Studio Wunderbar is worth your time. Browse the collection and see which piece speaks to you.
