Not so long ago, there was a lot of handwork involved in realising your clothes. This was a lengthy process, apart from the fact that your textiles had to grow first. Since 2018, The Linen Project has been growing flax to make linen. We do this both manually and by machine. In haute couture, everything is made by hand, which requires a lot of skill and patience.
By popular demand, during State of Fashion we will organise a course to sew your own jeans by hand. For this we use the beautiful linen of The Linen Project. You sew your jeans completely by hand. You start by adapting the pattern to your own size. All subsequent steps, such as making a fly, sewing on the pockets, the waistband, are clearly explained so that you can wear your own jeans at the end of the course.
Experience with sewing is recommended for this course but if you have no experience, you will need to do preparatory homework.
Patricia Kooijman studied at the KABK in The Hague. She worked in the creative studio of a jeans brand for 20 years, making clothes and producing shows and objects for marketing purposes. Letting things emerge from making is her preference, the possibilities of a piece of fabric still fascinating her after all these years.
