Wouter van der Spek studied at the White Lily in Amsterdam, where he was inspired by his many visits to the Stedelijk Museum. The work of Anselm Kiefer in particular had a lasting impact. After his studies, van der Spek chose music: he played in bands, organised festvials, presented on the radio, and taught at art schools. Painting faded into the background – until he moved to Oostzaan. There he found peace, space and a new direction in painting and sculpting. The polder landscape around him became his new source of inspiration. He does not paint from observation, but from memory and the impression the landscape makes on him. He only signs his work on the back, he calls a signature on the front – ‘a blemish on your work and ego-affirming’.
