In this 3.5‑hour hands-on session, participants will join textile artist Selina Ben to explore the beauty of Sashiko, a traditional Japanese embroidery technique, and learn how to apply it to denim mending. Designed to be beginner-friendly, this workshop requires no prior experience with hand stitching or embroidery. By the end of the class, attendees will gain the fundamental skills needed to mend their favorite pair of jeans, making them last longer while transforming them into a unique artistic expression.

Workshop Includes:
- An introduction to the history of Sashiko in Japan
- A presentation of vintage Japanese textile examples and Selina’s Sashiko mending work
- A detailed explanation of mending materials, tools, and techniques for repairing holes and weak areas in denim, using artistic methods
- A demonstration and hands-on session covering four traditional Hitomezashi Sashiko patterns, along with a stitch-along activity. Participants will also receive an instruction booklet for these patterns
- A 30-minute consulting session on various mending solutions at the end of the workshop
- A detailed PDF instruction guide with a materials list and recommended books, sent via email after the class
- Coffee, tea, and snacks provided
What to Bring:
Participants should bring a pair of jeans or another denim item with visible damage (holes, weak areas, etc.). For those without damaged denim, scrap fabrics will be provided for practice.
Additional Info:
A Sashiko starter kit can be purchased during the workshop for €10, which includes two Sashiko needles, one Japanese leather thimble, and two fabric markers. Free Sashiko threads will be available to complete projects at home.
