The jewellery is designed at the Xzota atelier in Rotterdam. A sample is then made in wax by the producer in Bali. When this sample is completely satisfactory, the jewellery is made in gold, silver or brass.
This production is done in traditional ways by various small family workshops in Bali. It is here that the techniques of traditional goldsmithing are kept alive. To ensure the jewellery is made in good, ethical conditions, Xzota regularly visits the workshops. Xzota therefore has a very close relationship with the various goldsmiths and their families, as Danielle lives nearby. Tessy also regularly travels to Bali to visit the workshops, see the prototypes and bring the finished jewellery to the Netherlands. Moreover, Xzota invited the producer to the Netherlands, thus creating a positive cross-pollination of cultures and inspiration.
The packaging material and jewellery boxes are also handmade in Bali. The wooden presentation material, cushions and bags are made by local Xzota staff.
All the metals Xzota works with have a quality certificate. This guarantees that the silver and gold meets quality requirements, but unfortunately it says nothing about the ethical or environmental conditions in which it was mined. However, it is difficult to achieve more transparency in this sector, a problem Xzota is fighting against. Read more about metal mining in the COSH! blog.
Xzota buys the other materials such as chains, stones and pearls directly from producers in Thailand and Italy. The brand is committed to using more sustainable materials such as recycled brass, silver and stones.
Jewellery is often easy to recycle because metals such as gold and silver retain their value. As a result, there is no difference between jewellery made from new metals and re-melted jewellery. Xzota is circular because they use recycled metals, such as brass, as raw material. Bracelets in particular are made from recycled metals.
When items from the collection do not sell, Xzota remelts them into new designs. This way, there is no overstock and the brand can keep creating without worries!
You can also have your own jewellery remelted, or have your own stone incorporated into a piece of jewellery. Xzota will then design a unique custom-made piece of jewellery together with you. This is ideal for giving your own style to an inherited piece of jewellery, for example.
Although Xzota works closely with the family workshops that produce the jewellery, the brand still has a relatively long production chain. The jewellery is designed and sold in the Netherlands and made in Indonesia. Various materials such as the pearls and stones come from neighbouring Thailand. Other components come from Italy.
Most of the jewellery is completely vegan! For a small part of the collection, Xzota also uses pearls, so these do contain animal materials.
Are you looking for something delicate, or do you prefer playful? Either way, you’ll find it all at Xzota. The brand creates feminine, powerful and contemporary jewellery. The designs are handmade and are therefore available in ‘limited edition’. This makes your sparkling purchase just that little bit more unique!
Because the jewellery is handmade, Xzota can also create unique bespoke designs. So you can have a personalised piece of jewellery made, or have your own piece melted down to your liking. Xzota also has a ‘Make your own’ necklace collection where you can mix-and-match your own necklace.
The jewellery has a long lifespan because Xzota works with quality materials. The manufacturing techniques also ensure that you can cherish your jewellery for a long time. To make sure your purchase keeps its shine longer, the brand also provides tips & tricks on how to take good care of your jewellery. Moreover, Xzota offers a three-month warranty period during which you can have your purchase repaired free of charge. You can even get repairs after the warranty period.
A brand’s transparency is about being open and honest about the materials and processes used to make the jewellery. Xzota puts this to good use by sharing information about its family workshops in Bali.
Unfortunately, there is still a huge lack of transparency in the industry. This makes it very difficult for small jewellery brands like Xzota to trace where the metals come from.
