WORKING CONDITIONS & WAGES
ROOF produces exclusively in China, at a family-run, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 (2015) certified company in the province of Guangdong, with whom the brand has worked for over ten years. The relationship with the supplier is close and personal. Occasional visits to China take place to visit the factory. The contact is described as trustworthy, with personal exchange. Studio ROOF deliberately works with very few, carefully selected suppliers.
Part of the production is done by hand. Studio ROOF emphasises working exclusively with suppliers who comply with international laws and operate with transparency. Studio ROOF is actively committed to social and ecological causes.
For several years, 5% of Christmas revenue has been donated to Karm Marg, a children’s home in India that provides shelter and education to underprivileged children. Founder Romy also sits on the board of the associated NGO SCOMI. In addition, for every new design, one tree per year is planted through the Trees for All foundation, and additional trees are planted to offset unavoidable flights.
MATERIALS
- Recycled cardboard with a layer of FSC-certified paper
PACKAGING
The shipping packaging consists of a paper box that can be disposed of with paper waste, as well as a sealing sticker made of PET1 plastic, which is to be disposed of with plastic waste. The brand provides clear recycling instructions on its website.
WATER CONSUMPTION & CHEMICALS
The use of plant-based inks instead of conventional petroleum-based inks is a positive step in terms of chemical management, as plant-based inks generally contain fewer harmful solvents.
The printer is certified to ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 (2015), which implies basic standards in quality and environmental management.
Since the products are made from recycled cardboard, the release of microplastics during product use is not a relevant concern.
CIRCULAR PRODUCT DESIGN
Studio ROOF’s products are made exclusively from recycled cardboard. In a collaboration with Petit H by Hermès, Studio ROOF created art objects from leather and porcelain offcuts over five years. The self-assembly concept of the products brings a certain degree of modularity, which theoretically makes minor repairs easier. However, the brand does not offer an explicit repair service.
Studio ROOF recommends disposing of products at the end of their life cycle through normal recycling channels, and provides clear instructions for doing so.
