PRODUCTION LOCATIONS
- Rajasthan, India
- Kashmir, India
WORKING CONDITIONS & WAGES
Poppy Dream produces in India, specifically in Rajasthan and Kashmir, while storage and shipping are managed from Amsterdam. Production in India provides opportunities such as preserving traditional craftsmanship and supporting local communities but also involves risks related to insufficient labour rights and quality control. Through close, direct contact with suppliers and small production runs, the brand largely mitigates these risks.
The brand holds no certifications but relies instead on direct, long-term partnerships with a few producers.
All products are handmade, and founder Luise maintains regular contact with the workshops, which she visits personally to ensure fair pay and safe working conditions.
The brand promotes the social and economic independence of artisans and values respectful, culturally sensitive collaboration.
MATERIALS
- Cotton (Indian cotton, handwoven and hand-stitched)
- Wool
- Linen
- Cotton velvet
- Jute (handwoven)
- Bamboo
- Deadstock textiles from Indian overproduction (approx. 30% of the collection)
- Plant-based dyes (e.g. indigo, madder) with approx. 20% chemical fixatives
Poppy Dream mainly uses natural fibres.
Most materials are uncertified, and no formal standard documentation is provided. Nonetheless, many fabrics are comparatively resource-efficient due to their natural origin, durability, and artisanal production.
The use of deadstock materials reduces waste and encourages circular thinking. Read more here about whether deadstock is a sustainable solution for the fashion industry.
PACKAGING
- Poppy Dream uses recyclable kraft paper bags and cardboard boxes for shipments within Europe. For transatlantic deliveries, about 80% recycled plastic is used.
- Products from India are now rolled instead of vacuum-packed to further reduce plastic use.
WATER USAGE & CHEMICALS
Poppy Dream works with natural and ecological dyeing methods, mainly using indigo and madder (rubia root). Around 80% of dyes are plant- or mineral-based, while about 20% use chemical fixatives to ensure colour fastness. These processes significantly reduce synthetic chemical use.
As only natural fibres such as cotton, linen, wool, jute, and bamboo are used, no microplastics are released during production or use.
CIRCULAR PRODUCT DESIGN
Poppy Dream creates most of its products from monomaterials. The brand avoids synthetic fibres and does not mix plant-based and synthetic materials, improving recyclability overall.
About 30% of the collection is made from deadstock materials from Indian overproduction. While more resource-efficient, these can have varied fibre compositions that may complicate recycling.
A take-back service for used products is not yet offered. However, the brand is developing a repair programme, where customers will receive vouchers for repairs if products are damaged.
CIRCULAR BUSINESS MODELL
Poppy Dream currently does not offer an official repair or take-back service for used products. The brand plans to introduce repair vouchers for damaged products in the future.
Thanks to natural, durable materials and artisanal production, the items tend to last longer and can be repaired more easily if minor damage occurs.
Other circular business models, such as rental, resale, or return programmes, are not yet implemented. The focus remains on high-quality craftsmanship and timeless design.
DISTANCE & COMPLEXITY OF SUPPLY CHAIN
- India: Main production country, especially Rajasthan and Kashmir (weaving, dyeing, sewing)
- Amsterdam, Netherlands: Storage and distribution centre
- The Poppy Dream HQ is located in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
TRANSPORT
- Products are shipped from India to the Netherlands. Around 60% are transported by sea, 35% of overseas deliveries by air freight, and the remaining 5% also by air.
- Within Europe, orders are dispatched from Amsterdam. Shipping is CO₂-reduced as much as possible within the chosen logistics provider’s framework, though no specific data on offsetting or logistics partners is provided.
- 100% two-ply wool (sourced from the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir)
No certifications are indicated. There is no Code of Conduct for animal-derived materials.
PRODUCT DESIGN
Poppy Dream offers home and lifestyle products such as quilts, blankets, cushions, table linens, and bags.
The brand focuses on timeless designs that suit a variety of interior styles and living concepts.
SLOW FASHION PROCESS
Poppy Dream has no fixed seasonal rhythm but maintains a continuous, consistent collection gradually expanded with new designs. The brand works in small batches, reflecting a mindful production approach.
All products are made in small series.
PRODUCT TRANSPARENCY
Product pages include basic information such as material composition, care instructions, dimensions, and crafting methods. They also describe the cultural context and connection to traditional craftsmanship.
Production countries or specific workshops are not disclosed, limiting traceability for individual products. Customers therefore learn how an item is made but not exactly where or by whom their specific piece was produced.
However, since Poppy Dream maintains a short, direct supply chain between its partner workshops in India and its base in Amsterdam, overall transparency remains relatively high and traceability is easier to ensure through close personal contact.
PROCESS TRANSPARENCY
Poppy Dream shares general information on materials, crafting techniques, and production philosophy on its website but provides no detailed supplier or factory data. The brand describes its collaboration with artisans in Rajasthan and Kashmir in broad terms without naming specific partners. Transparency is thus limited to general pages that explain the making process but do not allow product-level traceability. Although the localised and manageable production network contributes to a higher degree of operational transparency overall.
Conclusion
Poppy Dream merges traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern home design. The Amsterdam-based brand works directly with artisans in Rajasthan and Kashmir to create handwoven quilts, blankets, cushions, table linens, and bags made from natural materials.
