Mus & Bombon is based in Barcelona, Spain. This is where the collections are designed. Production is not far from there, as the brand works with Spanish and Portuguese manufacturers. Because strict labour rules and regulations are in place in Europe, we can assume that the clothes are produced in ethical conditions.
In addition, several of Mus & Bombon’s products have GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification. This certificate controls the use of chemicals and water in the production process of organic cotton clothing. It also checks the working conditions.
Mus & Bombon has several certificates to show that they use sustainable materials in their collections. One of these is the OEKO-Tex certificate. OEKO-Tex checks the presence of chemicals in the clothes so that they are completely safe to wear.
In part of the collection, the brand uses recycled polyester. This material has the GRS certificate (Global Recycling Standard). This means the product is at least 50 per cent recycled polyester mixed with conventional polyester.
Other synthetic materials used by Mus & Bombon are acrylic, nylon, polyamide, and elastane. Unfortunately, these are not sustainable materials as they are made from petroleum. Synthetic materials also have the risk of releasing microplastics when washing the clothes. To prevent this, COSH! recommends washing your synthetic clothes in a GuppyFriend. This is a laundry bag that catches the microplastics, so they do not end up in the water.
Mus & Bombon also uses sustainable materials such as organic cotton. Part of the collection is made of organic cotton and also has the GOTS certificate. This means that the production process has been checked for water and chemical use. Organic cotton is sustainable as no harmful chemicals are used. Also, much less irrigation water is needed to grow organic cotton compared to conventional cotton.
Part of the collection is made of viscose. Mus & Bombon uses different types of viscose; Modal, Ecovero viscose and conventional viscose. The first two are viscose types made by the company Lenzing. Lenzing developed a sustainable production process where no chemicals can be released. Conventional viscose, however, has a very chemical production process where wood pulp is transformed into textiles. Mus & Bombon does assure that the wood pulp comes from sustainable forestry, and the brand has the FSC certificate to prove it.
Mus & Bombon’s collections do not score very well in terms of circularity. This is because the brand often combines different materials in one garment. Such material blends are difficult to recycle after use. Especially mixing natural materials with synthetic materials makes the garment very difficult to recycle.
Part of the collection is doing better. Garments made from a single material are easy to recycle. When a garment is made from one material, we call it a mono-material. COSH! hopes that Mus & Bombon will use more mono-materials in the future.
Mus & Bombon designs the collections themselves at their Barcelona headquarters. The clothes are produced in Spain and Portugal. This allows the brand to have a short supply chain. The products do not have to travel a long distance to be sold in Europe.
Unfortunately, there is little information about the origin of the materials. It is possible that the materials are produced in China or Australia. In that case, the supply chain would still be a lot longer.
Mus & Bombon use a variety of animal materials in their clothing. Among others, they use cashmere, mohair and sheep’s wool in the knitwear collection. The shoes and belts are made of leather. Unfortunately, Mus & Bombon does not provide any information about this, making it difficult for us to judge whether these are animal-friendly products. For shearing the wool, the animal normally doesn’t suffer pain, but this depends heavily on the way the shearing is done.
At Mus & Bombon, you will find stylish women’s fashion. Their style is classic and feminine with timeless colour combinations and prints. The collection includes dresses and tops as well as shoes, accessories and even swimwear.
Mus & Bombon uses high-quality materials. This combined with the simple and timeless designs gives the clothes a longer lifespan.
In terms of transparency, Mus & Bombon does not score very well. The brand does list the production countries where their collection is made, but does not provide specific information to go with it. Information about the origin of the materials used is also missing. This means that we cannot get a full picture of the supply chain, animal welfare and sustainability of the materials.
