Bettina Lindblom designs all MaMidea products herself from her studio near Helsinki. All designs are also extensively tested by the MaM team in Finland. The products are then made by a Finnish manufacturer in China.
Thanks to the daily, direct communication between MaMidea and the manufacturer, the brand has a clear picture of the working conditions and can assure that all products are made in ethical and safe conditions.
The brand has been working with this producer since 2004. Production takes place in China, but the atelier adheres to European labour rules. For example, in terms of working hours, sick leave and payment of wages, the manufacturer follows the same rules that apply in Finland.
Unfortunately, MaMidea cannot prove in what conditions the clothes are made. Because they communicate little detailed information, it is difficult to verify whether the workers are indeed paid fairly, have correct working hours and work in safe conditions.
MaMidea uses mostly natural materials in their collections. Clothing in the ECO Hempies product line is made of 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton, while the Natural Woolies series consists of 100% merino wool.
MaMidea does not list a certificate number or any other proof for the organic cotton in their products, so COSH! cannot say with certainty that the material was indeed produced without chemicals.
All of MaMidea’s products are certified by OEKO-Tex Standard 100, which means no harmful, chemical substances are present in the products. So you can be sure that your purchase is completely safe for you and your kids!
In some products of the MaM collection, the brand does use synthetic materials. This is because synthetic materials sometimes have properties that are necessary in certain products, for example in the baby carriers, where the strength of polyester is needed. Washable sanitary pads also contain polyester in the waterproof bottom layer. This ensures that the pads are completely leak-proof.
To still work as sustainably as possible, MaMidea chooses recycled polyester instead of virgin materials as much as possible.
MaMidea’s collections are largely circular because they are made of natural materials. For example, the ECO Hempies and the Natural Woollies series are both biodegradable because the clothes are made out of natural materials and don’t contain any chemicals.
Some products also contain synthetic materials, making them non-biodegradable. The mixing of different materials also makes these products more difficult to recycle after use.
MaMidea also offers repair kits in the ManyMonths children’s collection, so you can expertly repair any tear or stain. Ideal when you have little rascals who love to romp around all too much!
MaMidea does not have a short supply chain as the products are made in China. The brand does make sure that they have a direct and close collaboration with this manufacturer, therefore there are fewer links in the supply chain.
Although some of MaMidea’s products are vegan, the brand also uses a lot of merino wool in their designs. The ‘Natural Woollies’ range is included in the women‑, men- and kidswear collections. This clothing is made from 100% merino wool.
To ensure that the wool is obtained in an animal-friendly way, the Finnish brand only uses mulesing-free wool. Mulesing is the cutting away of excess skin on the back of the sheep. This is done to prevent parasite infections, but as it is often done unanaesthetised, it is a very animal-unfriendly practice.
However, by not knowing the origin of the wool, we cannot verify the conditions the sheep live in, which is disadvantageous for the brand’s animal welfare.
All of MaMidea’s collections are carefully designed to meet the needs of families at different phases of childhood and parenthood. The brand tests the products extensively before putting them into production. This way, MaMidea is sure that their clothing and baby accessories meet the highest standards of parenthood.
In the ManyMonths collection, you will find children’s clothes that grow with your child from every month. For men too, there are warm jumpers and accessories in the MaD collection.
In the MaM series, in addition to women’s clothing and maternity wear, you will also find baby carriers and matching accessories. Here, MaM offers various techniques for carrying your baby close to you. Finally, MaM also has a selection of zero-waste essentials such as washable sanitary pads.
MaM does provide information about their producer, but does not go into detail in doing so. There is also little information about the origin of the materials. As a result, MaM scores rather low on transparency.
Conclusion
At MaMidea, you will find sustainable clothing collections for the whole family. Moreover, the Finnish brand also has zero-waste essentials for during and after your pregnancy. Find out where to buy the brand on the map below.
