Boob design is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. The brand designs all its collections there, after which the clothes are made by various production partners. Boob works with producers in Portugal, Italy, Greece, India, Turkey and Morocco. To make sure their code of conduct is followed, Boob regularly visits the factories. The brand works to build a long-lasting, close partnership with each manufacturer.
Moreover, most of the manufacturers the brand works with are certified. Several of the manufacturers have ISO9001 and ISO14001 certificates. This shows that the producers comply with quality and environmental requirements. Thereby, the producer’s compliance with labour regulations is also checked.
Some production partners have the GOTS certificate (Global Organic Textile Standard), which determines that the cotton used is organic. This certificate also checks the working conditions in the factories.
Finally, several production partners are members of the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI). This is an organisation that helps companies build ethical production and supply chains.
Boob’s collection features many garments made from organic cotton. These clothes always have the GOTS label, which shows that the production was audited. So you can be sure that no chemicals were used in the production process.
This applies to the entire Boob collection. In fact, the clothes also have the OEKO-Tex Standard 100 certificate. This certificate guarantees that no chemicals are present in the clothes, and that they are completely safe for you and your baby.
Besides cotton, Boob also uses other natural materials such as Tencel Lyocell, Modal and Ecovero. These are different types of viscose made by Austrian company Lenzing.
Viscose is made from wood pulp, in this case derived from eucalyptus, beech and other wood from sustainably managed forests. Lenzing’s closed-loop production process guarantees that no chemicals can be released. Unfortunately, there are also negative sides to these materials, as there is a link between eucalyptus forests and annual forest fires in Spain and Portugal. Read more about the research COSH! Conducted on the sustainability of Lyocell.
To ensure that all clothes and underwear are comfortable, Boob also adds elastane in its designs. Unfortunately, this is a synthetic, non-durable material. Nevertheless, this material is needed to ensure that the clothes can stretch and move with you. Boob also uses a recycled elastane. This is made from production waste that is recycled in Japan and then spun by a German manufacturer.
Furthermore, the brand also uses synthetic materials in its sports and swimwear. Still, to keep the clothes as sustainable as possible, Boob chooses to use recycled materials here too. For example, the leggings contain recycled polyamide from the brand Q‑nova, while the bikinis are made of Econyl. These are both recycled polyamides that have Global Recycling Standard (GRS) certification.
The recycled polyester in the workout bra and leggings also has the GRS label and was coloured using an innovative and water-saving process.
Because Boob’s designs always consist of a combination of natural materials and elastane, or of different synthetic materials, the clothes are difficult to recycle after use. Even in the knitted jumpers, the durable merino wool is combined with 20% polyamide. To recycle the clothes, these materials must first be separated, the necessary recycling techniques for this are still under development.
Boob does aim to be more circular and therefore recycles all their production waste.
Boob doesn’t really have a short supply chain as part of its production takes place in India, Morocco and Turkey. Still, the length of the supply chain is limited because the brand works with several European manufacturers. The distances between Turkish and Moroccan manufacturers and Europe are also limited. Moreover, only 2 of the 14 producers are based in India.
To limit their ecological impact, Boob offsets the CO2 emissions of their transport. This way, you can be sure that your purchase was shipped CO2 neutral.
The Boob collection is partly vegan, meaning it does not contain any materials of animal origin. In addition, the brand has some designs made from merino wool. Because Boob values animal welfare, the brand only works with mulesing-free wool. Mulesing is an animal-unfriendly practice where part of the sheep’s skin is cut away without anaesthetic.
Moreover, Boob has GOTS and RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) certificates. The GOTS-certified wool is not only mulesing-free but also organic. This means that no harmful chemicals were used. The RWS label verifies animal welfare and the quality of the wool.
Boob wants their clothes and underwear to be worn for as long as possible and therefore chooses quality materials. To ensure you can enjoy your Boob purchase for a long time, the brand also provides care tips to wash your clothes in a sustainable way.
The Boob collection has a wide range of elegant and comfortable maternity clothes, underwear and even sportswear for mums-to-be. The clothes are designed so that you can continue to wear them even after pregnancy, with convenient closures for easy breastfeeding.
Because the Boob designs have a long lifespan, the brand encourages you to pass the clothes on when you no longer use them. This way, different women can use the fun Boob products and the clothes are less likely to be discarded.
Boob is also exploring how to develop sustainable business models. That is why the brand has set up a rental service in collaboration with Swedish Hyber. That way, you can rent maternity clothes instead of buying them! Currently, this service is only available in Sweden.
In terms of their direct manufacturing partners, Boob is 100% transparent. The brand indicates on each product page by which manufacturer the garment was made. Likewise, you can read about each producer to find out how the company works and which certificates it has obtained.
Boob is also fairly forthcoming about the origin of the materials. For instance, we know that the merino wool comes from South America and that the polyester is recycled in Japan and produced in Germany. We also know the producers of the Econyl, Tencel, Lyocell and Ecovero materials. An exception is the cotton, of which we don’t know where it is grown and produced.
At Boob, you’ll find the best outfits for (future) mums. Whether you are looking for a cute dress to go to work or a comfortable work-out outfit, Boob has it all! Moreover, the clothes are designed for comfort during and after pregnancy, as well as including easy nursing access. Find out where to buy Boob clothing and underwear here:
