Boob design

Boob design is head­quar­te­red in Stock­holm, Swe­den. The brand designs all its coll­ec­tions the­re, after which the clo­thes are made by various pro­duc­tion part­ners. Boob works with pro­du­cers in Por­tu­gal, Ita­ly, Greece, India, Tur­key and Moroc­co. To make sure their code of con­duct is fol­lo­wed, Boob regu­lar­ly visits the fac­to­ries. The brand works to build a long-las­ting, clo­se part­ner­ship with each manufacturer.

Moreo­ver, most of the manu­fac­tu­r­ers the brand works with are cer­ti­fied. Seve­ral of the manu­fac­tu­r­ers have ISO9001 and ISO14001 cer­ti­fi­ca­tes. This shows that the pro­du­cers com­ply with qua­li­ty and envi­ron­men­tal requi­re­ments. Ther­eby, the pro­du­cer’s com­pli­ance with labour regu­la­ti­ons is also checked.

Some pro­duc­tion part­ners have the GOTS cer­ti­fi­ca­te (Glo­bal Orga­nic Tex­ti­le Stan­dard), which deter­mi­nes that the cot­ton used is orga­nic. This cer­ti­fi­ca­te also checks the working con­di­ti­ons in the factories. 

Final­ly, seve­ral pro­duc­tion part­ners are mem­bers of the Busi­ness Social Com­pli­ance Initia­ti­ve (BSCI). This is an orga­ni­sa­ti­on that helps com­pa­nies build ethi­cal pro­duc­tion and sup­p­ly chains.

Boo­b’s coll­ec­tion fea­tures many garm­ents made from orga­nic cot­ton. The­se clo­thes always have the GOTS label, which shows that the pro­duc­tion was audi­ted. So you can be sure that no che­mi­cals were used in the pro­duc­tion process.

This appli­es to the enti­re Boob coll­ec­tion. In fact, the clo­thes also have the OEKO-Tex Stan­dard 100 cer­ti­fi­ca­te. This cer­ti­fi­ca­te gua­ran­tees that no che­mi­cals are pre­sent in the clo­thes, and that they are com­ple­te­ly safe for you and your baby.

Bes­i­des cot­ton, Boob also uses other natu­ral mate­ri­als such as Ten­cel Lyo­cell, Modal and Eco­vero. The­se are dif­fe­rent types of vis­co­se made by Aus­tri­an com­pa­ny Lenzing. 

Vis­co­se is made from wood pulp, in this case deri­ved from euca­lyp­tus, beech and other wood from sus­tain­ab­ly mana­ged forests. Lenzin­g’s clo­sed-loop pro­duc­tion pro­cess gua­ran­tees that no che­mi­cals can be released. Unfort­u­na­te­ly, the­re are also nega­ti­ve sides to the­se mate­ri­als, as the­re is a link bet­ween euca­lyp­tus forests and annu­al forest fires in Spain and Por­tu­gal. To ensu­re that all clo­thes and under­wear are com­for­ta­ble, Boob also adds elas­t­a­ne in its designs. Unfort­u­na­te­ly, this is a syn­the­tic, non-dura­ble mate­ri­al. Nevert­hel­ess, this mate­ri­al is nee­ded to ensu­re that the clo­thes can stretch and move with you. Boob also uses a recy­cled elas­t­a­ne. This is made from pro­duc­tion was­te that is recy­cled in Japan and then spun by a Ger­man manufacturer. 

Fur­ther­mo­re, the brand also uses syn­the­tic mate­ri­als in its sports and swim­wear. Still, to keep the clo­thes as sus­tainable as pos­si­ble, Boob choo­ses to use recy­cled mate­ri­als here too. For exam­p­le, the leg­gings con­tain recy­cled poly­ami­de from the brand Q‑nova, while the biki­nis are made of Eco­nyl. The­se are both recy­cled poly­ami­des that have Glo­bal Recy­cling Stan­dard (GRS) certification.

The recy­cled poly­es­ter in the work­out bra and leg­gings also has the GRS label and was colou­red using an inno­va­ti­ve and water-saving process.

Becau­se Boo­b’s designs always con­sist of a com­bi­na­ti­on of natu­ral mate­ri­als and elas­t­a­ne, or of dif­fe­rent syn­the­tic mate­ri­als, the clo­thes are dif­fi­cult to recy­cle after use. Even in the knit­ted jum­pers, the dura­ble meri­no wool is com­bi­ned with 20% poly­ami­de. To recy­cle the clo­thes, the­se mate­ri­als must first be sepa­ra­ted, the neces­sa­ry recy­cling tech­ni­ques for this are still under development.

Boob does aim to be more cir­cu­lar and the­r­e­fo­re recy­cles all their pro­duc­tion was­te.

Boob does­n’t real­ly have a short sup­p­ly chain as part of its pro­duc­tion takes place in India, Moroc­co and Tur­key. Still, the length of the sup­p­ly chain is limi­t­ed becau­se the brand works with seve­ral Euro­pean manu­fac­tu­r­ers. The distances bet­ween Tur­ki­sh and Moroc­can manu­fac­tu­r­ers and Euro­pe are also limi­t­ed. Moreo­ver, only 2 of the 14 pro­du­cers are based in India.

To limit their eco­lo­gi­cal impact, Boob off­sets the CO2 emis­si­ons of their trans­port. This way, you can be sure that your purcha­se was ship­ped CO2 neutral.

The Boob coll­ec­tion is part­ly vegan, mea­ning it does not con­tain any mate­ri­als of ani­mal ori­gin. In addi­ti­on, the brand has some designs made from meri­no wool. Becau­se Boob values ani­mal wel­fa­re, the brand only works with mule­sing-free wool. Mule­sing is an ani­mal-unfri­end­ly prac­ti­ce whe­re part of the shee­p’s skin is cut away wit­hout anaesthetic.

Moreo­ver, Boob has GOTS and RWS (Respon­si­ble Wool Stan­dard) cer­ti­fi­ca­tes. The GOTS-cer­ti­fied wool is not only mule­sing-free but also orga­nic. This means that no harmful che­mi­cals were used. The RWS label veri­fies ani­mal wel­fa­re and the qua­li­ty of the wool.

Boob wants their clo­thes and under­wear to be worn for as long as pos­si­ble and the­r­e­fo­re choo­ses qua­li­ty mate­ri­als. To ensu­re you can enjoy your Boob purcha­se for a long time, the brand also pro­vi­des care tips to wash your clo­thes in a sus­tainable way. 

The Boob coll­ec­tion has a wide ran­ge of ele­gant and com­for­ta­ble mate­r­ni­ty clo­thes, under­wear and even sports­wear for mums-to-be. The clo­thes are desi­gned so that you can con­ti­nue to wear them even after pregnan­cy, with con­ve­ni­ent clo­sures for easy breastfeeding. 

Becau­se the Boob designs have a long life­span, the brand encou­ra­ges you to pass the clo­thes on when you no lon­ger use them. This way, dif­fe­rent women can use the fun Boob pro­ducts and the clo­thes are less likely to be discarded.

Boob is also explo­ring how to deve­lop sus­tainable busi­ness models. That is why the brand has set up a ren­tal ser­vice in col­la­bo­ra­ti­on with Swe­dish Hyber. That way, you can rent mate­r­ni­ty clo­thes ins­tead of buy­ing them! Curr­ent­ly, this ser­vice is only available in Sweden.

Boob is also fair­ly forth­co­ming about the ori­gin of the mate­ri­als. For ins­tance, we know that the meri­no wool comes from South Ame­ri­ca and that the poly­es­ter is recy­cled in Japan and pro­du­ced in Ger­ma­ny. We also know the pro­du­cers of the Eco­nyl, Ten­cel, Lyo­cell and Eco­vero mate­ri­als. An excep­ti­on is the cot­ton, of which we don’t know whe­re it is grown and produced.
