From an early age founder Margriet Meijer saw how her mother ran a sewing school and her father put everything together himself. It was not long before she got behind the sewing machine herself and started experimenting. Margriet had always been interested in bags but couldn’t find the perfect one. So she made one herself with her mother’s leather machine. Her interest in the product and materials continued to grow. In 2012 Margriet started her own business: Monsak.

All Monsak bags are made under good working conditions in the studio in Amsterdam-West. Do you have specific wishes? At Monsak you can also get a custom-made bag according to your design. If you would like to make a unique leather bag yourself, you can also attend a Monsak workshop! Here you will learn all the tricks and proudly walk out of the atelier with a bag you made yourself!
All Monsak bags are made of rescued leather. This is leather that is rejected by very strict rules at large fashion houses. Monsak rescues the leather, cuts away the damage (such as insect bites or bumps) and transforms it into beautiful handbags.
By cleverly cutting out the patterns, Monsak also minimizes further waste of the leather. Even the smallest pieces of leather are used for pockets or for the pullers on the bags’ zippers.
Thanks to the upcycling of the rejected skins and their repair service, Monsak also fits perfectly within the circular economy! Monsak offers a lifetime warranty. Is your bag broken? Then you can have it repaired (usually free of charge) in the monsak atelier.
Monsak buys the neglected leather from a Dutch wholesaler. Therefore, the Monsak products do not travel by boat or plane. All online orders are delivered as much as possible by bicycle couriers. For orders outside Amsterdam, Monsak works with an electric delivery van!
The Monsak bags are made of real leather and are therefore not vegan. However, no new leather is made for Monsak. Leather is also a sturdy material, so it lasts a long time.
