SCHMITZ&BITS is the flagship store of Belgian slow fashion brand Arlette Schmitz. That label was created in 2018 when former journalist Sophie De Laere chose a career switch and became a fashion designer. She studied fashion design at SASK Sint-Niklaas and specialised in pattern making.
Arlette Schmitz takes a resolute approach when it comes to sustainability. From concept to production, the collections are carefully manufactured in Belgium, mostly in the atelier in Ghent. Thanks to this local approach, the brand can reduce its carbon emissions and prevent the exploitation of workers in low-income countries. In a world where fast fashion often overshadows ethical considerations, this dedication served as a testament to Arlette Schmitz’s values.
Arlette Schmitz’s ultimate goal is to create clothes of lasting beauty that customers can cherish for many years. The label encourages its customers to lovingly repair any wear and tear, in line with the Japanese philosophy of WABI SABI to see beauty in imperfection.
Apart from Sophie’s own brand, SCHMITZ & BITS also offers clothing, accessories and even illustrations from local designers and creatives.
