Floor to ceiling, in just 22 square metres: at the second-hand store BROKE on Tußmannstraße 5 in Düsseldorf-Pempelfort, every centimetre is put to use. For more than 18 years, it has been a destination for pre-owned streetwear and designer fashion for women and men, along with shoes, accessories, books, and art. The store is run by its owner, Nathalie Holper. First-time visitors usually need a moment to take in everything hanging, standing, and lying around them. That’s exactly the appeal: at BROKE you don’t shop to a plan; you let yourself be surprised.
The stock comes from private sellers who hand Nathalie their well-kept favourites on consignment. Each item stays in the store for three months. If it hasn’t found a new owner by then, it either goes back to the person who brought it or is donated to a social organisation. That keeps the selection constantly moving, so regulars find something different every time they drop by. For you, that means most pieces exist only once, and whatever you hesitantly put back today may be gone by your next visit. Now and then, prototypes and pieces with small flaws find their way into the store too.
The focus is clearly on streetwear, with pieces from brands such as Carhartt, Levi’s, adidas, Vans and G‑Star. Next to them hang items from designer labels like Closed, Acne Studios, Marni, Burberry and Dolce & Gabbana. Between the clothes you’ll also find shoes, bags and accessories to complete an outfit on the spot. Prices range from under 25 to around 200 euros. If your interests go beyond fashion, you’ll find something between the rails too: BROKE also stocks pop culture such as Asian arthouse films and graphic novels, plus art and small gifts. The crowd is just as mixed. From young shoppers to customers in their seventies, every generation comes through the door, and each is looking for something different.
