Passionate about bikes and sustainable innovation, Brecht and Charlotte started Erts Cycles. With his engineering background, Brecht had previously built a racing bike for Charlotte, based on a second-hand frame, which led them to conversations about the logic of reusing these high-value steel frames.
Reusing these bike frames has several advantages. Not only is it more sustainable and unique to reuse raw materials, but the top quality of the locally made frames from 1970-’90 also offers many opportunities.
Thus, Erts Cycles started building completely new bicycles made with the frames of old, discarded bicycles. The frames are collected locally and sandblasted after quality control. Finally, the bikes are given a fun colour coating.
The brand deliberately chooses to match the frames with new components. This allows you to enjoy contemporary technology and comfort combined with the benefits and charm of a vintage steel frame. Moreover, this greatly facilitates your bike maintenance, as you or your bike mechanic do not need any special tools.
At the start of the Antwerp brand, Brecht built all the bikes himself at home. The brand has grown for several years, with them now collaborating with the customisation company De Sprong for much of the production process. This way, Erts Cycles participates in the local recycling of discarded bikes and contributes to the social economy by doing so!
