Yumeko was founded in 2010 in Amsterdam by two friends, Rob van den Dool and Stephan Zeijlemaker. The idea started simply: walking along the Amsterdam canals, they kept seeing dirty, discarded mattresses piling up and started asking questions about the textile industry behind them. What they found was an industry riddled with soil pollution, water contamination, biodiversity loss and poor working conditions. They decided to build a bedding brand that would prove things could be done differently.
Yumeko’s core range covers everything for the bedroom and bathroom: duvets, pillows, duvet covers, fitted sheets, towels and bathrobes. Their duvets are filled with recycled down collected, cleaned and given a new life instead of ending up as waste, or Tencel, a fibre derived from sustainably managed wood pulp. The duvet covers and sheets are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, meaning the cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or artificial fertilisers, and the entire production process, from spinning to dyeing, meets strict environmental and social criteria verified by independent auditors.
What sets Yumeko apart is how far they go in tracing and verifying their supply chain. Rather than relying solely on third-party labels, Yumeko actively maps their own supply chain. Where certifications exist, they use them: GOTS for organic cotton processing, Fair Trade for farmer payments, B‑Corp for overall business impact. Where no certification is available yet, they work to make the chain transparent themselves. This combination of independent verification and self-driven transparency is what gives their sustainability claims real substance.
Yumeko also runs down recycling and mattress recycling services, helping customers return used products so that high-quality materials are reused rather than landfilled or incinerated. It is part of their commitment to closing the loop on materials that still have value.
Today, over 750,000 people sleep on Yumeko products across Europe. What started with selling pillows from home has grown into a brand that proves premium quality and responsible production are not a compromise, they belong together.
