De VerbroederIJ is a lively, socially driven community space located along the IJ waterfront in Amsterdam North, near the ferry to the east side. Co-developed with local residents, the space includes a city beach, café, vegetable garden, animal paddock and the creative workshop De ZagerIJ.
It’s a welcoming place where people come together to relax, share meals, garden, play sports or take part in events. The open calendar includes free public activities such as neighbourhood dinners, live music, kids’ programmes, creative workshops and community sports — most of them co-organised by locals.
More than just a café, De VerbroederIJ supports community building and social inclusion. People distanced from the labour market can join work-training or daytime programmes. The space also hosts local initiatives like the Free Food Market and a composting project with neighbourhood pigs Barry & Rosita.
The vibe is warm and informal: guests can enjoy lunch, coffee or a drink — also via the “suspended meal” system, allowing others to eat for free. Reservations are possible for the café or meeting room, while the terrace and beach remain open to all.
Got an idea? De VerbroederIJ encourages residents to start their own initiatives and helps them with space, visibility and support — ensuring the space grows with and through the community.
