Bags, Gifts and Makers’ Stories in Merwede
On Sunday 22 November, the creative hubs Vechtclub XL and Kanaal30 in Utrecht’s Merwede district open their doors for Winterwinkelen. Makers van Merwede, the collective of studios and workshops in the area, invites visitors to follow a route past both locations and Beton‑T. Along the way you can meet the people behind the products and find artisan presents for the festive season. Collect stamps on your route card and pick up a small gift at the end.
One maker worth a visit is Belinda Werschkull of Studio Macnas, who designs and makes bags in her studio at Kanaal30. Macnas is Irish Gaelic for playful, flirtatious and sensual. The name is a nod to Belinda’s Irish roots and to the feeling of falling for a bag you love to carry. Her designs have a playful, urban Utrecht style, recognisable by their black hardware and asymmetric shapes. The collection includes bags made with materials based on cactus, apple peel, mango and kombucha.
Take your time to browse, ask the makers about their materials and techniques, and start your holiday shopping close to home.
