Rust, Pattern and a Kimono of Your Own
Over two days at New Order of Fashion in Eindhoven, Amber Witte, founder of the label Free Prisoner, guides participants through a process where experimenting and designing merge into one finished garment. The result is a handmade kimono cut from a zero-waste pattern, designed so that no fabric offcuts are left over.
Saturday is all about rust. Participants discover how rust reacts with fabric, moisture and time, and what marks it leaves behind. They then measure, draft and cut their kimono pattern and take their first steps at the sewing machine. On Sunday everything comes together: each participant picks the rust technique they like best from their experiments, applies it to their kimono and finishes the garment.
Everyone goes home with a kimono shaped by their own experiments and design choices. No sewing or dyeing experience is needed, so beginners and experienced makers are equally welcome. Rust dyeing is hands-on work, so wear clothes that can get dirty.
