Curated by Rachel Dedman and Louise Bennetts, State of Fashion 2024 |Ties that Bind captures creative practices in fashion, textiles and contemporary art from the global South. This edition of the Biennale explores the complexity of tradition, the political power of clothing and alternative solutions to exploitative fashion systems.
Ties that Bind has a decentralised structure. The Biennial unfolds across four locations: the home location Arnhem in the Netherlands, and the three sister cities Nairobi (Kenya), Bengaluru (India) and São Paulo (Brazil). For each sister city, an interlocutor/liaison partner – Sunny Dolat, Kallol Datta and Hanayrá Negreiros – has been invited to develop a State of Fashion project in their local context, responding to the themes of the Biennale as they relate to the urgencies and experiences of their cities and communities.Ties that Bind celebrates fashion in all its guises, by focusing on critical creative practices from around the world. How do makers from the global South deal with colonial legacies embedded in clothes and fabrics? How do designers develop passed traditions and deal with the pressing issues of our time? Rooted in the universal intimacy of textiles, Ties that Bind seeks to strengthen the kinship and connection between global practices and share the powerful human stories woven into what we wear.
The exhibition Ties that Bind can be visited from Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 – 17:00 at our main location Rembrandt Theatre. Programme sections can also be visited at Rozet, Museum Arnhem and Plaatsmaken.
