Colour from Plants, Roots and Flowers
Sweta Pandey, founder of Charkha & Loom, brings her knowledge of traditional Indian textile craft to Indeave in Haarlem for a three-hour, hands-on natural dyeing workshop. Participants discover how plants, roots, flowers and earth-based materials can bring colour and pattern to fabric.
The session starts with the basics: an introduction to natural dyes, how to choose fabric, and how to prepare the fibres so the colour bonds well and lasts. Next comes eco-printing. Leaves, roots and powders are arranged directly on the fabric, which is then steamed to fix the imprint of the plants into it. Along the way, Sweta shares tips on choosing materials and methods for future projects at home.
Everyone goes home with their own piece of naturally dyed silk, ready to be turned into a fashion or interior piece of their choice. The workshop suits complete beginners as well as experienced makers who want to add a new technique to their repertoire.
