Kintsugi literally means “golden joinery”. It’s a traditional Japanese technique for repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and gold powder. Instead of hiding the breaks, the technique highlights them, so the cracks become part of the object’s story. It’s a nice thought: something doesn’t have to be perfect to be valuable.
In this workshop you get to work with a repair kit in gold or silver. Guided by Elien, you mend a broken piece of ceramic and make something new of it, with visible joins that tell the object’s story. It’s also an invitation to slow down for two hours and look at imperfections in a different way. You don’t have to give it any big meaning, but there’s room for it if you want.
No creative talent or experience is needed, as Elien guides you step by step. You’re welcome to bring your own broken piece of ceramic, though a smaller one works best for a first try. Don’t have one? Fonetik provides ceramics to repair. You take your mended piece home at the end.
